Georgia Grows EQ: In what ways did Atlanta grow after WWII, and how did this growth positively impact Georgia?

Atlanta Growth After WWII, the entire state experienced a growth in population. Mild winters Favorable tax rates for businesses Development of Atlanta as a transportation hub Civil Rights Movement Atlanta in particular grew (added 100 square miles) Transportation (freeways, airport) Today, more than half of GA’s population lives in ATL

William Hartsfield

William Hartsfield Atlanta mayor for 6 terms! 1937-1941; 1942-1961 Made Atlanta into an aviation hub for the Southeast Bought old Candler Racetrack to use as a location for the airport Atlanta Civil Rights Leader Organized biracial coalition with MLK Sr. Voter registration drives Hired 8 black police officers in 1948

William Hartsfield Atlanta Civil Rights Leader Atlanta becomes a city of racial moderation Integrated golf course Integrated city busses Integrated Atlanta Public Schools Integrated lunch counters

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Largest employer in the state of Georgia Busiest passenger airport in the world since 1998 Atlanta is within a two hour flight of 80% of the US population Averages more that 240,000 passengers every day

Why are these things important to Georgia Studies?

Ivan Allen

Ivan Allen Atlanta businessman that served as mayor of Atlanta from 1962-1970 Continued Mayor Hartsfield’s “peaceful integration” by removing “colored” and “white” signs from City Hall. Integrated the fire department and city government Brought new businesses and skyscrapers to Atlanta Peachtree Center Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Voted down by Fulton and DeKalb

Ivan Allen Instrumental in turning Atlanta into a “big league city” Promised facilities needed for major league sports teams Braves and Falcons came in 1964 Hawks came in 1968

Ellis Arnall Governor of Georgia (defeated Eugene Talmadge in 1942) served from 1943-1947 First governor to serve a 4-year term The board of regents was separated from the governor’s office which helped Georgia’s colleges and universities regain their accreditation The prison system was removed from the governor’s control by establishing a board of corrections to oversee prison and a pardon and parole board to handle requests Abolished the poll tax; new constitution in 1945 Did not fight the supreme court ruling in 1946 which declared the “white primary” unconstitutional Led Georgia to be the first state in the U.S. to allow 18-year-olds the right to vote
