Analyze the impact of the rise of the two-party system in Georgia. d. Evaluate the effect of the 1996 Olympic Games on Georgia. e. Evaluate the importance of newimmigrant communities to the growth and economy of Georgia.

3.  Formed in 1960, when Georgia’s governor chose to close schools instead of following a federal order to desegregate them.  Their work was to make the transition from segregation to integration easier for schools.

4.  1961-they were the first African American students to enroll in the University of Georgia.

5.  Albany, Ga, had refused to desegregate schools  SNCC and NAACP organized protests  Arrests overwhelmed Albany and forced integration

6.  MLK’s “I have a dream” speech  Goal was to get jobs and freedoms for all citizens.

7.  1964  Forbade segregation in public facilities and businesses associated with the government.  Forbade discrimination based on sex or race in hiring, promoting, or firing.

8.  1974-became the youngest (35 yrs old) and first African American mayor of Atlanta.  Expanded Hartsfield Airport and his name was added to the airport after he died.  Helped get the 1996 Olympics for Atlanta

9.  Segregationist who became governor in 1967  Defeated Ellis Arnall.  Surprised everyone by appointing more blacks to state boards and commissions than all prior governors combined.  Turned out to be a good governor.

10.  1962- the Supreme Court ruled that the system was unconstitutional.  It violated the “One person-one vote” policy  Now voters in cities (urban areas) have same power as rural areas.

11.  1964- the Supreme Court ordered Georgia to redraw voting districts to make them fair.  Now voting districts are divided by population, not geography.

12.  Democratic Party held almost all power in Georgia for the 100 years after Reconstruction.  In the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Republican candidates started gaining ground.  Georgia now has both parties represented.
