People Jigsaw. You will read about THREE prominent figures in Atlanta history post WWII: Ivan Allen Jr, William B. Hartsfield, and Ellis Arnall. At your table, decide who is going to read each article. If you have FOUR people, TWO of you will read the same one.
Read the article and answer the following questions on your own sheet of paper.

3. William B. Hartsfield
Mayor of Atlanta for SIX terms 1937 – 1941 and 1942 – 1961
Did not finish high school or college, but was admitted by the Georgia Bar and opened his own law practice
AVIATION:
Credited for developing Atlanta into the aviation powerhouse that it is today
Helped establish Atlanta’s first airport
ECONOMY:
Helped the city recover from the Great Depression
Guided the city through WWII
Atlanta tripled in size from 37 to 128 square miles
Oversaw the building of the expressway system and several city parks
Civil Rights:
Created the image of “The City too Busy to Hate”
Built a biracial coalition that was useful at the beginning of the civil rights movement
Helped the city PEACEFULLY integrate its public schools

4. Ivan Allen Jr. Mayor of Atlanta 1962 – 1970 ECONOMY: CIVIL RIGHTS:
Prior to mayor he was President of the Chamber of Commerce launching Forward Atlanta campaign to attract business
Graduate of Georgia Tech and served in U.S. Army
ECONOMY:
1965- brought Braves
1966- brought Falcons
1968- brought Hawks
Atlanta ranked top ten in downtown construction with 55 new buildings
22,000 new jobs
MARTA was proposed and mapped
Oversaw early phases of construction of Interstate 285 and Downtown Connector
CIVIL RIGHTS:
Brokered a peaceful path to integration
1st day in office, ordered the removal of all “white” and “colored” signs from city hall and desegregated the cafeteria
Authorized black policemen to arrest whites and hired the first black firefighters
Worked with Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
Supported President Kennedy’s Civil Rights Act of 1964
Encouraged the desegregation of restaurants, hotels, and public facilities before the passing of the Civil Rights Act
