A few quick housekeeping items: Our crisis management plan is in effect if we need to use it. Sign up for the email alerts on the school website. They will tell you if we needed to evacuate the school because of fire or other threats. We will evacuate to a nearby school (Bridgedale or St. Martin’s) Please review your handbook for dropping off and picking up your children.

Fill out background check authorization. (available at training) I won’t talk about curriculum—you’re welcome to look at your child’s books and ask specific questions later. If you think you would like to volunteer for any field trips or class activities, you must receive Safe Environment training. Good for three years Attend training session. (There will be one at St. Edward on Sept. 20 at 7:00pm) Fill out background check authorization. (available at training) Pay $15 to process background check. Do online survey.

They are in charge of telling you anything I tell them at school They also write themselves notes on their homework sheet to remind themselves what they need to do They own their folder and everything in their bookbag. They should come to you and show you anything needing to be completed or signed.

We want them ready for fourth grade at the end of the year, where they will have to move around to different classrooms with different teachers for different subjects

So what do you do? You can sit with them while they look in their folder You can ask “What’s in your folder?” or “Is there anything you need to show me?” When you put something in their folder to give to me, tell them. Check my website together Check that homework and seatwork brought home is done Don’t go through their bookbag or folder when they are not around or sleeping! (I may have told them to keep something in there.) Trust what they say until proven wrong. You are welcome to contact me to verify anything!

Will they all miraculously fall into this responsible routine NOW? Maybe not. but They ARE ready to start.

Third grade moves faster than second grade. They can handle it! It’s lots of work, but I’m there every step of the way. I pack with them for homework every afternoon. We go over everything before they study it or do something for homework. Nothing should be new to them. “Ms. Guirovich never talked about…” “She never showed us…” I try to never let these be true statements! Please do not go ahead in doing Math or English homework.

Any seatwork that isn’t finished at school goes home that day. This is okay every once in awhile (especially in the beginning), but if it becomes chronic, we should talk!

This is not a punishment! If work goes home but isn’t completed for the next day: A reminder is sent home, a “Parent’s Notice.” This is not a punishment! You can sign it when your child shows it to you and the work is COMPLETE. Usually, a second chance is given (in the beginning) if the work is still not finished or the paper not signed, and then a retention is given as a consequence.

I walk the aisles for the first nine weeks, watching for: Following class rules Materials out Finishing their work Correcting their work Right books out, on the correct page, ready Following directions Working together Looking for anyone needing assistance

If they are not doing what they need to be doing, I always warn them (usually more than once) before the name goes on the board I do what I can, but I may miss something— please check your child’s work when you are at home!
