British Taxes in the Colonies Lecture 2 British Taxes in the Colonies

Navigations Acts (1651) Forced American colonists to trade only with Great Britain

Colonial Response Massive amounts of smuggling occurred which angered the British

Writs of Assistance (1761) British Officers could search any American trading boat at any time no matter what Intended to prevent smuggling

Colonial Response Heightened tension between the colonists and the British Colonists complained it violated their rights as a British subject

Sugar Act (1764) Increased taxes on molasses and sugar Attempted to crack down on smugglers

Colonial Response Further angered colonists because they felt they were being unfair treated and taxed “Taxation without Representation”

Quartering Act (1765) Act passed by British allowing British troops to stay in American colonists’ homes Could provide Protection for colonists

Colonial Response Angered by having to feed and house British soldiers Felt military presence was highly unnecessary

Townshend Acts (1767) Placed duties(taxes) on paper, glass, paint, and tea British wanted to raise revenue in the colonies to pay the salaries of governors and judges so that they would remain loyal to Great Britain Punished New York for not obeying the Quartering Act

Colonial Response Colonists extremely angered Protesting took place Britain sent troops to Boston which eventually led to the Boston Massacre

Knights Charge 10/2 What were the Navigation Acts? What happened as a result in the colonies? How did the British attempt to stop smuggling? Name 3 Acts passed by the British and how the colonists reacted to them.

Stamp Act (1765) Required that printed materials in the colonies be printed on Stamped paper so it could be taxed

Stamp Act Congress It was the first gathering of elected representatives from the American colonies Formed official protest against new British taxation.

Virginia Resolutions (1765) Formal responses created by the House of Burgesses in reaction to the Stamp Act

Patrick Henry “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!”

Declaratory Act (1766) Repealed the Stamp Act Justified Britain’s ability to tax the American colonists

Colonial Response Colonists felt that Britain didn’t have the right to continue to tax Americans Felt that more unjustified acts were upcoming

Knights Charge 10/3 What was the Stamp Act? How did the Americans respond? Name 2 things. How did the British respond? (Hint: it was with another act.) What did it say? Translate the Virginia Resolutions and put into your own words. You may work together.
