Science Starter Monday 9/12/16 Seats/groups are the same. I just rearranged the desks  Pick up one of each pages from the front- bell work, notes, activity report, unit divider, and exit ticket. Write in your agenda. Answer the following on your science starter page T./E.1-Engineers from an automobile company are making a new car. The seats in older models of cars become very hot. The engineers want seats in the new car to stay cool even in hot weather. What should be the first step toward solving this problem? How do you know? While you wait on others to finish the bell work question, go ahead and be coloring the unit divider pink.

Essential Question What is the relationship between potential and kinetic energy?

Stand up and make an “X” with your body. Don’t drop your arms Stand up and make an “X” with your body. Don’t drop your arms. Try to stand as still as you can. Holding this X position, you are gaining/storing potential energy. You’re just waiting for me to tell you to drop your arms. This energy is waiting to be converted into kinetic energy. Now, do a jumping jack. This is kinetic energy- energy of motion.

Energy is the ability to do work. Work is the transfer of energy. Work occurs when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.

You will be observing and recording the amount of work done by two marbles, of different sizes, as they roll down an inclined plane. Your task will consist of placing each marble at the top of the incline to build potential energy; then, you will release that energy as each marble rolls down the incline. Take note of when the marbles reach their fastest speed. Each marble should be positioned on the incline to strike the milk carton at the bottom. You will measure the distance the milk carton travels each time in centimeters. To be sure your results are accurate, you will roll each marble three times- starting with the smallest first. The second marble should be tested after all three trials of the smaller have been completed. Now- On your activity page, form a hypothesis based on which marble you believe will or will not move the milk carton farther.

Now, complete steps 2 and 3 of the marble roll with your group. **Be sure to follow the steps on your activity report to also ensure no experimental errors are made. I will be walking around to guide you when needed. You will have 8 minutes to complete steps 2-4. REMEMBER to include if your hypothesis was correct or incorrect and explain why or why not. Conclusions should be about 3+ sentences.

Mechanical energy is the total energy of motion and position of an object. Mechanical energy = Kinetic energy + Potential energy

The energy associated with changes in the nucleus of an atom Example: nuclear power plant

Everything is made up of atoms! They are made of protons, neutrons and electrons.

In order to create nuclear power an atom must either be split in two or joined with another atom. This is not a process that is easily done. It requires a lot of work and highly qualified persons – as well as advanced technology.
