ABCs Reports The High Student Performance tab includes information about how students performed on state end-of-grade or end-of-course tests. The Safe, Orderly and Caring Schools tab highlights data for school safety, student attendance and instructional resources, which includes how many books are in school libraries and how many classrooms are connected to the Internet. The Quality Teachers tab provides information about the number of teachers who are fully-licensed and/or have advanced degrees or National Board Certification, and the percent of teachers that are classified as Highly Qualified as defined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

North Carolina Resource: NCCAT NCCAT conducts seminars for pre-K through 12th grade teachers, counselors, library media specialists, nurses, social workers, and psychologists employed full-time in North Carolina public schools. Interdisciplinary seminar topics include the physical and biological sciences, technology, humanities, arts, communication, and health and wellness Each five-day seminar includes immersion in hands-on study and learning with colleagues from across the state. RBT & Essential Standards The Essential Standards are written using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy RBT has well-defined verbs and is built on modern cognitive research RBT will help move North Carolina students to the complex thinking expected from 21st Century graduates (RBT) under the guidance of one of the authors of the revision, Lorin Anderson.

RBT answers the Four Fundamental Questions THE LEARNING QUESTION: What is important for students to learn in the limited school and classroom time available? (Prioritized and focused) THE INSTRUCTION QUESTION: How does one plan and deliver instruction that will result in high levels of learning for large numbers of students? ( Success for all) THE ASSESSMENT QUESTION How does one select or design assessment instruments and procedures that provide accurate information about how well students are learning? (Assessment for learning and less assessment of learning) THE ALIGNMENT QUESTION: How does one ensure that objectives, instruction and assessment are consistent with one another? (the degree of consistency) In the unit development process, Dr. Anderson facilitated the answer to the four fundamental questions for effective curriculum development. The first question required an analysis of the current standard course of study. This helped to prioritize and focus the answer for teachers and students.

Essential Standards express the most important knowledge (object) and processes (verb) students should learn during the semester or year in which the course or subject is taught. What does it look like? All Essential Standards have the same grammatical structure: subject-verb-object and will start with “The student…” Course Essential Standards and Clarifying Objectives The New SCOS ES CLARIFYING OBJECTIVE What is it? Clarifying Objectives express the necessary knowledge and processes students must master in order to master the ES. The clarifying objectives “unpack” the most important content for clear understanding of the ES. They are, however, above the day-to-day instructional objective level. What does it look like? For the purposes of distinguishing them from Essential Standards, Clarifying Objectives will begin with the verb, not "The student…” as will Essential Standards. Clarifying Objectives Clarifying Objectives Clarifying Objectives Assessment Prototypes Used as part off the standards development process As a bridge to classroom assessment and test development To ensure the standards are concrete and measurable Essential Standard “The Student will be able to…” The Classroom Prototypical Assessment is a question, problem, or task that a teacher could use in the classroom to determine how well students are learning the Essential Standard. Clarifying Objectives Prototypical Assessment Classroom EOC-EOG Clarifying Objectives Clarifying Objectives For the purposes of the accountability framework, the EOC-EOG Prototypical Assessment must be written as it would likely show up on a summative assessment. Notice that the Classroom and EOC-EOG may be (and in some cases should be) based on the same kind of question, problem, or task. They differ primarily in their format.

National Resources: NRC publications Ready, Set, Science! Putting Research to Work In K-8 Science Classrooms

National Standards in Science The National Science Education Standards were produced by the National Research Council in 1995 and published in 1996. The Standards were the result of four years of work by twenty-two scientific and science education societies and over 18,000 individual contributors. The National Science Teachers Association is now part of an ongoing effort to implement the Standards in classrooms throughout the country.

NEW National Standards in Science Draft framework public comment from July 12 through August 2 The NRC committee has begun the process of summarizing and digesting. This process will take several months. Once the revisions are complete, the framework will undergo confidential review. Then the framework report will be finalized and released to the public. The final version will not be publicly available until early 2011.

NEW National Standards in Science The education nonprofit organization Achieve (www.achieve.org) will then work with a group of states to develop a set of standards for K-12 science education They will be based on and guided by the final NRC committee framework report. Achieve has already begun planning and is currently developing a network of state partners. Further opportunities for public comment will be managed by Achieve as its work on the science education standards proceeds in 2011.
