APUSH Writing Lab Students will display proper APUSH essay analysis and writing techniques via group-based study sessions. Objectives: Students will present well-written and coherent documentation proving their understanding of historically related topics within writing.

Section I: Introduction (1 Point) 3-5 sentences with the final sentence being a strong thesis statement. Underline your thesis statement with ink. Thesis statement must include the sub-topics that you are going to discuss i.e. the major points of your essay. This must also be underlined.

Body of the Essay (7 Points) 3 paragraphs with 5-7 sentences within each paragraph. Each paragraph must start with an opening sentence to include the sub-topic of discussion. Each paragraph must end with a transition sentence moving the reader from the idea you have just presented to the next idea you are about to write about. Each paragraph must feature a minimum of 4-6 “hard facts”/content. These can include people/dates/events/documents/battles etc.

Conclusion (1 Point) 3-4 sentences concluding your essay. Restate your thesis statement. Be sure to do this in a different structure than in your introduction. Simply write your original thesis differently.

DBQ Specifics Use as many documents as possible!!! If there are 10 documents, try to use all ten. While referencing a document cite it in this fashion: (H), (Document H), or after the sentence you have just completed (Document H) NEVER SAY “As seen in Document H” (change as of 2011-12 AP Central) Do not paraphrase the document, the reader already knows what it is displaying, simply reference the idea. Use APARTS to assist you with understanding how to use the documents Treat a DBQ as an FRQ and simply infuse the provided documents.

Advice Never refer to yourself as the first person. Cut the fluff… NO “I believe that Jefferson was saying…. YES “It can be understood” YES “One can develop a level of understanding about” Cut the fluff… Do not reference events that are in the distant future and report on them. You CAN however, include a portion discussing that the reported event will: “…lead to further conflict as seen with the American Revolutionary War.” All information can be found within your notes. I highly advise that you are making AP Outlines: Opening paragraph, bulleted body, conclusion. Additional information can be found within the chapter vocabulary.
