Establish TIME & PLACE. Create a clear, THESIS STATEMENT. [underline or highlight it!] Allude to the SUB-TOPICS or categories you will discuss to support your thesis statement Focus on the question at hand—do NOT begin with a “flowery” sentence! No “laundry list!”

5 Thesis Statement Points Possible – 1 Three Levels Too broad or general
Too much information or very laundry listy Just Right – This should be 2 to 3 sentences

6 Contextualization Limited or no connection between the prompt and the broader picture of the time period will not gain you this crucial point Contextualization in the introduction paragraph is a good idea

Let your reader know that you understand which of the historical thinking skills you are arguing Convince your reader you have the evidence to support your thesis

Start with a “concluding phrase.” Restate your thesis statement a bit differently. Put your essay answer in a larger historical perspective. End of some trend/movement/idea, etc. Beginning of some trend/movement/idea End of one & beginning of another. Do NOT end on the note that this is the reason we are where we are today!
