1 Introduction Hook: The attention grabbing sentence that makes the reader want to read your paper. (The first sentence of your paper). Ways to start your paper: I. Definition: Define key words or themes that are the subject of your paper. II. Fact: Use a fact using a historical source. III. Anecdote: Short 2-3 sentence example or story. IV. Quote: Quote from an interview with the author or other expert.

2 Next few sentences of the introduction
Provide background information about the book A. When it was written B. 2-3 sentences about the story/ background information

3 Last sentence of your introduction: The Thesis Statement
Topic + previewing points (2) + what you are proving (the original part).

4 Conclusion Restate your thesis statement Then what?…….

5 Conclusion You want to make your paper relevant to today.
For the next few sentences provide modern day examples of how your topic is still relevant. (i.e. Examples of violence, fear, hopeless). Sources can be news events, other movies or books. DO NOT USE “I” or any other other personal pronouns in a formal essay.
