Tobacco and Society: Tobacco is a HUGE business in the United States.   Tobacco is a HUGE business in the United States. Tobacco companies spend more than $24 million (US only) on advertising and promotions EVERY DAY!!!!!

WHO DO THEY WANT TO ATTRACT???? Tobacco companies are constantly losing customers everyday because they are quitting or dying. Therefore they want to attract new users. WHO DO THEY WANT TO ATTRACT????

Children & Teenagers!!!! Children and teens represent the most profitable market. * Children and teens have their whole life ahead of them, that’s why tobacco companies want them as their new customers (a customer for life).

Why are children and teens so valuable to the tobacco companies?????? The majority of smokers begin before the age of 18. 80% before age 18 90% before age 20

Tobacco Addiction Despite the high personal costs and health risks a large number of people continue to smoke or chew tobacco. This is because they have formed an addiction.

Addiction- a physical or psychological need for a drug.

Physical Dependence- A type of addiction in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug. Nicotine affects body temperature, heart rate, digestion, and muscle tone. Tobacco users DO NOT feel normal unless their body is under the influence of nicotine.

Psychological Dependence- -an addiction in which the mind sends the body a message that it needs the drug (nicotine). - Events , situations, and habits trigger a desire to use tobacco.

2 types of secondhand smoke: Mainstream smoke - the smoke that the smoker inhales and exhales into the air. Sidestream smoke – smoke coming off the burning end of the cigarette.
