1.02 Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution, otherwise known as reconciliation; A clash between hostile or opposing elements, ideas or forces https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY5TWVz5ZDU (watch this for a better understanding of the definition) What is it?

Where and with whom can conflict happen? Conflict can happen between any interpersonal groups: parents/children, teachers/students, employers/employees, best friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, and with strangers you meet in public Where and with whom can conflict happen?

Is there such a thing as “positive” or “constructive conflict? Constructive or positive conflict occurs when people express disagreement without hostility and with a commitment to resolve the conflict. Conflict, while often avoided, is not necessarily bad. In fact, conflict can be good for organizations because it encourages open-mindedness and communication. The key is learning how to manage conflict effectively so that it can serve as a catalyst, rather than a hindrance, to organizational improvement. Is there such a thing as “positive” or “constructive conflict?

People have different morals, values, personalities and needs, which can create situations where others do not agree with their thoughts or actions. When a conflict escalates, it may draw more people into the situation, heightening any already existing tension. Why argue?

First, you must understand and comprehend what’s wrong In your relationship At Work At home At School Before you can begin to address the issue 1. Define the problem

2. Suggest possible solutions One person can’t be right all the time. Suggest alternative solutions to solve the problem Compromise—both sides must give in order to get a cohesive relationship/environment once again Realize not everyone wants to get along. Sometimes you just have to let it go! 2. Suggest possible solutions

3. Evaluate possible solutions “So if I do this, then what?” “If I accept your offer, what’s in it for me?” “ So we have option A or option B. Which one will benefit the greater good of everyone involved?” 3. Evaluate possible solutions

You must be willing to make concessions in order to end the dispute Both sides must be willing to let go of something they want 4. Compromise

5. Seek mediation/arbitration if the conflict cannot be resolved If you’ve tried to talk to the other person, and no reasonable solution may be found—try mediation! Mediation is involvement of a neutral 3rd party person to try to seek an agreeable end to the dispute. Both parties agree to accept terms of the agreement and end the dispute 5. Seek mediation/arbitration if the conflict cannot be resolved

Can’t we all just get along? Conflict is a normal part of any healthy relationship. After all, two people can’t be expected to agree on everything, all the time. Learning how to deal with conflict—rather than avoiding it—is crucial. When conflict is mismanaged, it can cause great harm to a relationship, but when handled in a respectful, positive way, conflict provides an opportunity to strengthen the bond between two people. By learning conflict resolution skills, you can keep your personal and professional relationships strong and growing. Can’t we all just get along?
