Learning target and Opening Learning Target: I will build an understanding of how poetry uses imagery and literary devices to create mood. Opening: Quick Write: What is poetry? What does a poet look like? Explain yourself.

Understanding Poetry?

Analyzing Poetry Area One- Title and Literal Meaning Area Two- Your Interpretation What does the title mean? Put the poem in your own words. What do you think: • Who/What is the subject of the poem? • What are they talking about? • Why do you think the author wrote the poem? • When/Where is the poem happening? • What is the poet’s attitude? Area Three- Poetic Devices Area Four- Theme What do you notice about the stanzas and rhyme? How does the author create imagery? Sensory details/figurative language. For what purpose? What sound devices does the poet use? Why? Identify the theme (central idea) of the poem. How does the theme convey the poem’s message?
