2 Poetry Reading Strategies
Before reading a poem, write down your thoughts on the title and make a prediction. While reading the poem, notice the words and phrases that make up the poem. Make a prediction on who you think the speaker could be. How do you feel about the topic of the poem. Write down the evidence that supports your thoughts.

3 More strategies... While reading the poem, do you notice any imagery, sound devices, or figurative language? Write down the words or phrases that you are not familiar with. Are there context clues to help you determine the meanings of words? Summarize the stanzas in your own words.

4 Questions 1. Read the poem, write down 2-3 connections you can make from the poem. 2. Explain how what you thought about the topic compares to what the poem is about. 3. Once you have read the poem, generate three questions that you have about the poem compared to what you thought the poem was going to be about. 4. Once you have read the poem, write three words or phrases that caught your eye and write why you chose that word or phrase.

5 More Questions 5. Write three or four sentences discussing the speaker of the poem. Who do you think the speaker is? 6. How do you feel about the topic of the poem? Provide evidence to support your thinking. 7. Write down any imagery, sound devices, or figurative language that you notice. Also, write any words or phrases that you do not know or are interesting to you. 8. Did you notice context clues to help you determine the meaning of the unknown words or phrases?

6 More Questions 9. Choose 3-5 words and write down why you think the author chose those words. Could other words have replaced those words or been more appropriate? (synonyms) 10. Read the poem focusing on the speaker. What can you infer about the speaker from the poem? What is the speaker’s point of view of the topic? How does the point of view influence how the poem is told? 11. What is the theme of the poem. What is the author trying to teach the reader? 12. Summarize each stanza from the poem in your own words.
