Marxism Primark’s sweatshops that pay children just 60p a day Summarise the article on your WS 7 minute's

Lesson objectives ALL of us will be able to define CAPITALISM MOST of us will be able to describe the idea of ‘class struggle’ SOME of us will be able to explain how they view the family EXTENSION- CAN YOU explain the class struggle using your own example from todays society

your TERMINOLOGY BOOKS Please copy these into your TERMINOLOGY BOOKS and as we go through today's lesson you should be able to find their meanings  Macro Means of production Class divisions Exploitation Ideology Class consciousness Capitalism Conflict MARXISM KEY WORDS

RECAP How do Functionalists see the Family? Answer this in one sentence

How do the New Right view the family? Answer this in one sentence

Prior to Marx and Engel’s work, there were many people who noted the disparity between rich and poor FIGHTING FOR COMMUNISM! (french revolution) Some felt systems in a government should help to evenly distribute wealth so that no one was impoverished. This was the impetus behind the French Revolution, though it did not result in the equality of classes and the banishment of poverty that early advocates of the revolution foresaw.

Word of the day… CAPITALISM: Capitalism generally refers to an economic system in which the means of production are all or mostly privately OWNED and operated for a profit

You need to remember ME my name is Karl Marx and this whole theory was named after me! Marx is without a doubt the most influential socialist thinker to emerge in the 19th century!!

with the class struggle “AT THE dawn of the 21st century, one-fifth of the world’s population lives in absolute poverty on one US dollar a day or less, while the assets of the 200 richest people are larger than the combined income of the poorest 2.4 billion on the planet.” Marxism is concerned with the class struggle Between rich And poor

Write down three PRIVATELY OWNED BUSINESSES THAT MAKE A PROFIT 3 minutes! THINK! Write down three PRIVATELY OWNED BUSINESSES THAT MAKE A PROFIT (This is what we call the private sector) Extension: What’s the Public Sector?

MARXISM Society is made up of 2 social classes Owners (bourgeoisie) Workers (proletariat) The clash between them is called class struggle. The owners try to make their ideas and practices (which benefit them) seem to be ‘common sense’ for everyone. This is their ideology, which is spread by their media and education system. Please write the definition of these onto your work sheet 

Bourgeoisie or Proletariat? Sir Phillip Green (owner of Topshop) Chloe from MADE IN CHELSEA (his daughter) Bourgeoisie or Proletariat? Worth………………5 billion pounds!

Bourgeoisie or Proletariat? Workers in Mauritius receive as little as 22p to 40p an hour, about 40% below the local average wage http://www.nosweat.org.uk/node/571

E.G. your lucky to have a job making clothes for Topshop WHY DO THESE WORKERS ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BE EXPLOITED? The owners (Phillip Green) try to make their ideas and practices (which benefit them) seem to be ‘common sense’ for everyone. E.G. your lucky to have a job making clothes for Topshop This is their ideology, which is spread by their media and education system.

What we need to understand The economic system we have is Capitalism The owners exploit the workers. They extract surplus value This is the surplus left over after wages are paid (profit) THINK What would the employers be tempted to do with wages? What would the employers be tempted to do with how many workers are employed?

A worker who makes T-shirts for the Topshop Kate Moss range, said they were paid £112 a month - equivalent to about 40p an hour. The T-shirts are sold in Topshop for £12. What’s Phillip Green doing? http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/fashion/article2241665.ece

What do all these words mean? Capitalism (OUR COUNTRY NOW) Refers to an economic system in which the means of production are all or mostly privately OWNED and operated for a profit Socialism (ECONOMICAL) Socialism was viewed as a step between THE country’s current state of capitalism and its move to complete communism. Communism (POLITICAL) Communism aims for a classless society end of wage labour. Every member of society should have an equal say.

Well how does this link to the family? Like functionalists, Marxists believe the family contributes to the maintenance of societies structure. Marxists do not think the nuclear family as functionally necessary. Marxists believe the family is about a continuing conflict between social classes with opposing interests.

Biggest difference between functionalism and Marxism…. Marxists argue the nuclear family teachers people to ‘know their place’ and obey the ruling classes. So families in the PROLETARIAT will continue to produce children that will be workers that forever obey the BOURGOISIE. Marx wanted SOCIALISM; where everyone will produce exactly what's needed for exactly who needs it and follow the same rules!

Have we hit our lesson objectives? ALL of us will be able to define CAPITALISM MOST of us will be able to describe the idea of ‘class struggle’ SOME of us will be able to explain how they view the family
