Good Morning!!!! 1.NVC /Collect Poster 2.Responding to Capitalism: Socialism/Communism 3.Karl Marx and the Communist Manifesto Essential Question: How did workers respond to Capitalism? Homework: Study for Test

Capitalism Leads to Problems Smith believed in “perfect freedom” – No rules! – Goal: Make as much money as you can! Result: Workers exploited – Low wages – Long hours

The Industrial Worker… “Nobody troubles about the poor as they struggle helplessly in the whirlpool of modern industrial life. The working man may be lucky enough to find employment, if by his labor he can enrich some member of the middle classes. But his wages are so low that they hardly keep body and soul together. If he cannot find work, he can steal, or he can go hungry and then the police will see to it that he will die of hunger in such a way that does not disturb the life of the middle classes.”— Friedrich Engels

Rise of Socialism Socialism: a mixed economy – Private businesses still exist – Government controls some parts of the economy for the welfare of all – Redistribute wealth to make things more equal and help people

Growing Anger “Consider what is happening among the working classes. Do you not see spreading among them, little by little, opinions and ideas that aim not only to overturn a law or a government, but society itself, to shake it to the foundations upon which it now rests?”— Alexis de Tocqueville

Karl Marx Karl Marx: a German radical socialist – Radical: someone with extreme views Communist Manifesto: by Marx and Engels – Book that sets down ideas of Communism (radical socialism) – Society has always been divided between the “haves” and the “have nots” = Class Conflict! – Middle Class Bourgeoisie are at war with the Working Class Proletariat

The Future According to Mark According to Marx – the working class (proletariat) will violently overthrow capitalism and the bourgeoisie – The workers will take control of government and all private business – Final Goal: a classless society based on cooperation and equality

Communism vs. Socialism How are Communism and Socialism similar and different? Review your notes and please explain.
