Modify Adverbs and Adjectives Adverb: a word or phrase that modifies the meaning of an adjective, verb, or other adverb. ADVERB SPELLING NOTES i) Adjectives ending -l add-ly; careful-carefully. ii) Adjectives ending -y change to -ily; lucky-luckily iii) Adjectives ending -ble change to -bly; responsible- responsibly.

There are many adverb such as: Adverbs of manner modify a verb to describe the way the action is done. E.g. She worked carefully. Adverbs of place show where the action is done. E.g. They live locally. Adverbs of time show when an action is done, or the duration or frequency. E.g. He did it yesterday. (When) Adverbs of degree increase or decrease the effect of the verb.

E. g: I completely agree with you E.g: I completely agree with you. (This increases the effect of the verb, whereas 'partially' would decrease it.) An adjective can be modified by an adverb, which precedes the adjective, except 'enough' which comes after. E.g. Hat's really good. An adverb can modify another. As with adjectives, the adverb precedes the one it is modifying with 'enough' being the exception again. E.g. She did it really well.

Adverbs can be sorted into the kinds of questions they answer Adverbs can be sorted into the kinds of questions they answer. Adverbs of manner answer the question, “How?” and adverbs of time “When?”  Adverbs of place “Where?” and adverbs of degree answer “How much?” An adverb of frequency “How often?” Here are some examples: She watched the children carefully. (How?) I always arrive early for my appointment. (When?) Why don’t you play outside? (Where?) After the trip, I was totally exhausted. (How much?) We watch movies occasionally. (How often?)
