Safe Practices in the Science Lab

Good Ideas Review the lab procedure before you start, so you know what you’ll be doing. Keep a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and eyewash kit nearby. Use the safety equipment. Wear goggles and an apron during experiments. Tie back loose hair and clothing when working in the lab.

Good Ideas Never inhale materials or chemicals. Never eat in the lab! Always slant a test tube away from you when heating it. Never inhale materials or chemicals. Never eat in the lab! Treat glass objects very care- fully. Handle all equipment as if it were hot or dangerous. If you spill anything on your clothes or skin, wash it off with water immediately.

Good Ideas If anything gets in your eye, wash it with lots of water ASAP. If your clothes catch on fire, DO NOT RUN. Stop, drop and roll. Flush any burns with cold water- immediately. Tell the teacher about any spills, accidents or injuries right away. Return all items to their proper places and turn all devices off. Do not wash any substances down the sink unless directed to do so.
