2 Lab safety is YOUR responsibility.

3 Read all directions for your experiment and follow the directions exactly.

4 Wear a laboratory apron to protect your clothing and wear safety goggles when handling chemicals or heating substances with the bunsen burner.

5 NEVER handle any equipment in the lab unless you have specific permission.

6 Be familiar with the location of safety equipment and know how to use them.

7 When diluting an acid, ALWAYS pour the acid into the water.

8 Tell your teacher immediately if any chemicals are spilled or if there are any accidents in the lab.

9 NEVER eat or drink in the lab unless you are specifically told to.

10 You should ALWAYS wash your hands with soap and water after handling chemicals.

11 Tie back long hair and roll up long sleeves when working with flames or chemicals.

12 Always keep work areas clean.

13 When heating a substance, ALWAYS point the test tube away from you and other people.

14 ALWAYS use tongs or hot pads when handling hot equipment.

15 NEVER pour hot liquids into a plastic container
NEVER pour hot liquids into a plastic container. The heat will cause the plastic to melt.

16 NEVER heat liquid in a closed container.

17 NEVER use chipped or broken glassware in the lab.

18 Glass tubing should NEVER be forced into a rubber stopper
Glass tubing should NEVER be forced into a rubber stopper. Instead, use a turning motion and lubricant to help insert the rubber stopper in the glass tubing.

19 Be very careful when using scalpels or razor blades in the lab
Be very careful when using scalpels or razor blades in the lab. ALWAYS cut away from you.
