A New Kind of War/Battlefronts of World War I Chapter 11.2

What methods of fighting were used during WWI? Focus Question What methods of fighting were used during WWI?

Trench Warfare Most of the area they were digging in was rarely a few feet above sea level. As soon as soldiers began to dig down they would find water 2- 3 feet below the surface. Water-logged trenches were a constant problem for soldiers on the Western Front.

Trench Warfare Frontline trenches: 7 ft. deep and at the top 2-3 feet across (you could jump over it) The rear side of the trench would consist of a thick line of sandbags to absorb any bullets or shell fragments. protected by barbed wire and machine-gun posts.

Western Front Stalemate 1st battle of Marne prevented a quick German victory. Soldiers fought from trenches Battle line remained unchanged

Eastern Front Battle lines shifted Casualties were higher than the Western Front. Russia was poorly equipped and forced to retreat

Elsewhere in Europe Bulgaria joined the Central Powers’ and helped defeat its old Balkan rival Serbia Romania joined Allies, but was crushed by Central Powers’ Italy was unable to stop Central Powers’ advance

Ottoman Empire Joined the Central Powers Turks fought on three fronts: Dardanelles, Caucasus, and the Middle East In the Middle East, the British sent T.E. Lawrence to assist in the Arab revolt against the Turks T.E. Lawrence is also known as Lawrence of Arabia

Colonies European colonies were drawn into the war. Some happily joined into the war, while others were uncertain.
