2. The story of the Frog and the Scorpion:
Scorpion: “Hey Frog. I need to get across that stream. Will you carry me on your back?”
Frog: “Only if you promise not to sting me, for then I will die.”
Scorpion: “I promise!”
The frog carried the scorpion across the pond. Once they were there, the scorpion stung the frog.
Frog: (In his last dying breath) “Why did you sting me?”
Scorpion: “Because I’m a scorpion. That’s what we do.”

Because of the failure of the Schlieffen Plan, countries became “stuck” on the Western Front.
Both sides dug deep trenches to protect their armies from enemy fire.
Led to a stalemate- a deadlock in which neither side can defeat the other.

1915- Allies secretly promise to give Austria-Hungary’s land to Italy. Italy switches sides and suffers huge losses against Germany.
