IB Programmes at Reagan High School An overview of next year’s scheduling options for your sophomore child.

What is IB? MYP Programme: 9th and 10th Grade DP Programme: 11th and 12th Grade - Two-year College Preparation Program - Some similarities to Advanced Placement (AP)

Three Options for Junior & Senior Year 1. IB Full Diploma 2. IB Career Certificate 3. IB Course Certificate

Option 1: Full IB Diploma Testing (in May of senior year) in 3 classes at the HL level Testing (in May of senior year) in 3 classes at the SL level Completion of the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class Completion of 150 CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) hours Completion of the Extended Essay (4000 words max)

Option 2: IB Career-related Program (IBCP) Two Pathways: Computer Sciences and Health Sciences Testing in at least 2 classes at the HL or SL level Completion of the Personal & Professional Skills (PPS) Course Completion of 50 Community Service Hours Completion of the Language Portfolio Completion of the Reflective Project

Option 3: Course Certificate Students that are Course Certificate candidates test in the number of subjects of their choosing (Reagan recommends all students to take at least 1 IB exam.) Course Certificate students take their regular course load as required to graduate from an MPS school. (All courses offered at Reagan are still IB courses, and students may still take additional electives if they’d like.) However, we do encourage all students to accept the challenge of the Full Diploma which requires taking 6 IB tests in their senior year, satisfactory completion of 150 CAS hours, a 4,000 word Extended Essay, and the Theory of Knowledge class! 

Being prepared: How much do IB exams cost ? The costs of the IB Tests taken by MPS students has been subsidized by the State of Wisconsin and the District. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch (FRL) pay only the Registration Fee. Students who do not qualify for FRL will pay the Registration Fee and only half the Subject Fee that IB charges the school: The Registration Fee for IB testing is approximately $160. (ALL students must pay the registration fee). The cost of each individual test (Subject Fee) is approximately $60. (IB charges $120. MPS has paid half of this in the past).

What’s Best for Your Child What’s Best for Your Child? When considering which courses to register for, great consideration should be given to receiving the greatest benefits of the IB programme: Study Skills developed by the student which he/she will need for college and a career. Time Management and Organization Skills gained in planning for school work. Pride and the Satisfaction of accomplishing difficult challenges.

Choose Carefully and Well CHALLENGE your students to do the most, not the least that they are able to do! Allow them to feel the discomfort that comes from doing difficult work as well as the pride they gain once that work is accomplished! Don’t let them quit! Decide together what’s in the best interest of your child’s future.
