1.0 INTRODUCTION Module : Research Project Module Code : DEC 2014 Credit Value : 4.00 PREREQUISITE Engineering Programme: Complete all core modules from Semester 1 – Semester 4/5

1.0 INTRODUCTION The Research Project is mandatory for all DHU Diploma students as a vital requirement in completing their studies. Objectives of RP are: To develop the students’ basic skills in research. To translate the students’ creativity and innovation into an actual project. To apply all the knowledge and skills gained throughout the module. To develop the students’ self confidence, communication, presentation, writing and time management skills.

2.0 STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES 2.1 The student is required to form a group (max. 3 students) and propose the research topic/scope based on the area of interest and related to the respective programme. 2.2 The research project title and application form shall be submitted on week 1 of the Academic Calendar. Any changing of grouping and title should be finalized within week 1. 2.3 The student is required to prepare and submit the proposal to the Supervisor on week 2. Proposal will include an overview of the topic and relevant background material, and a specific plan for carrying out the research. 2.4 The student is to plan the work properly and prepare the RP’s timeline (e.g Gantt Chart/ PDCA). The timeline must follow the calendar provided and be attached with the proposal.

2.0 STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES 2.5 The Proposal Defense will be conducted on week 3. The student is to prepare the presentation slides by using standard presentation template. 2.6 The Writing Seminar for students are scheduled on between week 5-7 of the Academic Calendar. Attendance is compulsory. 2.7 The student is responsible to meet the Supervisor at least once a week (consultation and monitoring). Discussion for every meeting must be written on Consultation sheet, verified by SV. Students have to sign the attendance sheet and must comply 80% to proceed to final presentation and RP Fiesta. 2.8 The student is to submit a Draft of Final Report to supervisor on week 11. The final report for evaluation must be submitted to supervisor and second examiner latest by week 12. 2.9 Student is to prepare for a Presentation/demonstration on week 12. 2.10 Submission of amended Final Report & CD and RP Fiesta are on Week 14. RP Fiesta is compulsory to all students.

The CNC machine needs approximately 200 litres of lubricant each month. Consequently, the company is required to spend at least RM1569.00 per month only for that lubricant. Annually, the company is required to spend RM18,828.00 to ensure efficient supply of lubricant. In order to save the lubricant cost, the company maintain to adding up the lubricants 200 litres which is the minimum level for the CNC machine. Therefore, this study of lubricant reuse is initiated to benefit the company on cost spend to the lubricants. Contents For Proposal Example of Scopes The scopes of this study are stated as below: Concept of Autonomous Maintenance – Only cover Step 3 of Autonomous Maintenance focusing on initiative to improve the lubrication management. Lubrication Management – This study is done on CNC machine at Deep Hole Drilling Machine located at the crankshaft line. Design and prototype – Cover the basic conceptualization and prototyping of isolating lubricants and chips. This project interfere to focus on separation concept which able to isolate lubricants and chips.
