Replica and Inspired Paintings and Artist Presentation This will be a large assignment worth a total of 80 points! It will consist of three assignments. 1.Replica Painting 2.Inspired Painting 3.Artist Presentation

Replica Painting For this portion you will choose an artist and do a replica of one of their famous paintings. You can choose from the artist book I have, or the artist list I provide you, or choose your own artist. If you choose from the artist list or on your own you must get approval of the painting you choose from me. You will do your best to reproduce the painting as close to the original as possible. Think anout the colors, brush strokes and textures you see.

Original Replica

Inspired Painting For this painting your inspiration will come from the artist you chose for your replica painting. Examine their work…what do you see. Your painting should be inspired from their work/style.

What comes to mind when you look at this painting….

Vincent Van Gogh- Starry Night

Artists are inspired by many things Life circumstances Cultural events Surroundings Social issues People/places/things Sometimes from different artists!

Paul Cezanne

Inspired Picasso and the cubist movement

Art work inspired by Picasso

…sometimes a painted can inspire other types of artists! Fashion photos inspired by Picasso!

What inspires you…??

Questions to consider What is the full name of your artist? What time frame/era was your painting made in or your artist worked? Describe in detail three things you learned about your artist’s style of painting. What are some characteristics of the period that pertain to your specific painting/artist? What interests you about their style? List some elements and principles that are evident in their painting or style of painting. What are you planning on doing in your artwork to show that you will have a similar style/content/theme of your artist? (For example- Will your subject matter be similar? Will your colors and brush strokes be similar? Will you try to convey the same message your artist was expressing?) What will make your painting different and unique from the artist you chose?

With your Partner discuss your idea for your inspired painting for 5 minutes. Give each other feed back. Share with the class a little about your idea, or check in with me about your idea.

Artist Presentation Painting: Replica and “Inspired” research presentation This project is designed to encourage your growth and knowledge in the visual arts. You will also be painting a replica of one of their paintings and doing an “inspired” painting based on their work. You will research a famous painter of your choice and prepare and give a presentation on that artist. Your presentation should be put in a PPT/Prezi, or a similar format. You will be graded on the following:   3 points _____ Describe the works of art using terms referring to the Elements and Principles of design such as: color, texture, space, form/shape, balance, pattern, line, value etc. 3 points_____ What was going on during the time the artwork was made that influenced the artist? For example: cultural, personal, social, historical, global, etc. An example would be Picasso’s blue period and how his state of mind (depression) affected his work. He used dark (sad) colors and a sad subject matter. Please only reference things that actually affected their work. Just because they painted during WWI doesn’t mean that it actually affected their work. What symbolism does artist use or what symbolism does the work have, if any? Are there hidden meanings through some of the subject matter? What was the artist trying to say? (This will come from reading about the artist and their work.) Who is the intended audience for this artwork? Who is meant to see it? Who is the artist trying to influence? Why did you choose this artist/artwork? What feelings does it evoke in you? What do you think about the artist? Include pictures of the artwork you are discussing. 2 points _____ Include 2 questions to ask the class for further discussion. Total_____/20
