Biomes A group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms. There are 6 major land biomes (6 letters in the word, 6 biomes). They are Desert, Tundra, Grassland, Deciduous Forest, Boreal Forest and Rainforest. Donald Desert Trump Tundra Gives Grasslands Russia Rainforest Baby Boreal Forest (taiga) Dolls Deciduous Forest

Biomes can also describe aquatic environments Freshwater Biomes (Ponds, Lakes, Streams) Freshwater is defined as having a low salt concentration—usually less than 1% Saltwater (Oceans)-The largest of all the ecosystems, oceans are very large bodies of water that dominate the Earth’s surface. Like ponds and lakes, the ocean regions are separated into separate zones: intertidal, pelagic, abyssal, and benthic. All four zones have a great diversity of species. Estuaries (where fresh water and salt water meet)-Estuaries are areas where freshwater streams or rivers merge with the ocean. This mixing of waters with such different salt concentrations creates a very interesting and unique ecosystem

What type of biome are these?

What is the difference between a biome and an ecosystem?? There is a difference between biomes and ecosystems. A biome is a large region of the world that has similar plants, animals and other organisms that are adapted to the terrain and weather of that region. An ecosystem is the interaction of plants and animals with nonliving things and each other. Each organism has a role to play within the ecosystem.

Desert Organisms must be adapted to little or no rain and to extreme temperatures to be able to live in the desert.

Rain-Forest Biomes Rain forests are forests in which large amounts of rain fall year-round. Very little sunlight reaches the ground.

How would you fill in the Venn Diagram with what you know about temperate and tropical rain forests?

Grassland Biomes On the world map, identify the continents which the Rhea, Cassowary, and Ostrich inhabit.

Deciduous Forest Biomes Most of the trees in a deciduous forest have leaves that change color and drop to the forest floor each autumn.

Boreal Forest Biomes Tree species in the boreal forest are well adapted to the cold climate. Because the water is frozen for much of the year, coniferous trees have thick, waxy needles to prevent water loss.

Tundra Biomes Although the ground is frozen for most of the year, mosses, grasses, and dwarf willow trees grow here.

Mountains Mountains are not part of any major biome.

Name the biomes outlined on the map. In which biome do you live? Earth Biomes Name the biomes outlined on the map. In which biome do you live? Boreal Forest

Biome Climates An ecologist collected climate data from two locations. The graph shows the monthly average temperatures in the two locations. The total yearly precipitation in Location A is 250 centimeters. In Location B, the total yearly precipitation is 14 centimeters.

What biome could this be?

Temperature and Rainfall for biomes

So how do animals live in such different environments? They have adaptations that make them more FIT for their specific biome.

For example…

What are some adaptations of a shark?

Animals live in their ecosystems with living and non living things (duh). Living things are call BIOTIC. If it was EVER alive, or comes from a living thing, it will always be a biotic factor Nonliving things are called ABIOTIC. LETS PRACTICE

Organisms can interact with others in their habitats. SYMBIOSIS is a close, long-term association between organisms of different species. There are three kinds of symbiotic relationships.

MUTALISM In mutualism, the relationship between the two organisms is interdependent. Each one gains benefits from the other. ++ (they both benefit) An example is an oxpecker on the back of the rhino…

PARASITISM A form of symbiosis in which one organism (called parasite) benefits at the expense of another organism usually of different species (called host); the association may also lead to the injury of the host. +- (one benefits, one is hurt) An example is a mosquito and humans

COMMENSALISM A form of symbiosis between two organisms of different species in which one of them benefits from the association whereas the other is largely unaffected or not significantly harmed or benefiting from the relationship. + O (one benefits, one is neutral) An example is the sucker fish and sharks

Practice! Mutalism, Parasitism or Commensalism?

Organisms have a niche in their habitat. SAY WHA Organisms have a niche in their habitat. SAY WHA? I thought those were the same. No. Sorry. Not the same

So what is the difference between a habitat and a niche? Habitat is the physical place or part of an ecosystem, occupied by a particular organism. It is actually a geographic location and describes specific features in the region where an organism lives. For example, the habitat of a whale is the open ocean, while that of an elephant is the forest or grassland. The habitat simply reflects the place of a particular organism lives and its lifestyle. Niche is the role of an organism within its environment or ecosystem. It is defined based on the diet, reproduction of a particular organism and the effect of its activities on the environment. For examples, some birds eat only fruits, other only insects, while the rest eat anything they encounter. These three types of birds can be live in the same habitat, owing to their three different niches.

Habitat or Niche?
