Classify Angles Lesson 7-1

Vocabulary Vertex – the point where two rays meet.

Name and Identify Angles Words: Two angles are vertical if they are opposite angles formed by the intersection of two lines. Vertical angles are congruent or have the same measure. Model: Symbols: ∠1 ≅ ∠3 ∠2 ≅ ∠4

Example 1 Name the angle. Then classify it as acute, right, obtuse, or straight. Three ways to name the angle: 1. Use the vertex as the middle letter and a point from each side, ∠XYZ or ∠ZYX. 2. Use the vertex only, ∠Y 3. Use a number, ∠1. Since the angle is less than 90, it is an acute angle.

Complete the Got it letter “d” in your notes. Example 2 Identify a pair of vertical angles and adjacent angles in the diagram. Justify your response. Since ∠2 and ∠4 are opposite angles, they are vertical angles. Since ∠1 and ∠2 share a common side, they are adjacent angles. Complete the Got it letter “d” in your notes.

Example 3 – Find the Missing Angle What is the value of x in the figure? The angle labeled (2x + 2) and the angle labeled 130 are vertical angles. 2x + 2 = 130 -2 -2 2x = 128 x = 64 So, the value of x is 64.

Example 4 What is the value of x shown in the sidewalk? The angle labeled (5x) and the angle labeled 115 are adjacent and form a straight angle or 180. 5x + 115 = 180 -115 -115 5x = 65 x = 13 So, the value of x is 13.

Complementary and Supplementary Angles Lesson 7-2

Real-World Link 1. What types of angles make up the two angles marked in the drawing of the bridge? 2. What is the sum of the two angles marked in the drawing of the bridge?

m∠1 means “measure of angle 1”. Pairs of Angles Words: Two angles are complementary if the sum of their measures is 90. Models: Symbols: m∠1 + m∠2 = 90 m∠1 means “measure of angle 1”.

m∠4 means “measure of angle 4”. Pairs of Angles Words: Two angles are supplementary if the sum of their measures is 180. Models: Symbols: m∠3 + m∠4 = 180 m∠4 means “measure of angle 4”.

Example 1 Identify each pair of angles as complementary, supplementary, or neither. ∠1 and ∠2 form a straight line. So the angles are supplementary.

Example 2 Identify each pair of angles as complementary, supplementary, or neither. 60 + 30 = 90. So the angles are complementary.

Example 3 Find the value of x. Since the two angles form a right angle, they are complementary. 28 + 2x = 90 -28 -28 2x = 62 x = 31 The value of x is 31

Example 4 Find the value of x. Since the two angles form a straight line, they are supplementary. 123 + 3x = 180 -123 -123 3x = 57 x = 19 The value of x is 19

Example 5 The picture shows a support brace for a gate. Find the value of x. Since the two angles are supplementary angles. 80 + 10x = 180 -80 -80 10x = 100 x = 10 The value of x is 10

Triangles Lesson 7-3

Classifying Triangles

Example 3 P Find the value of x in ∆PQR. P + Q + R = 180 x + 54 + 89 = 180 x + 143 = 180 x + 143 – 143 = 180 – 143 x = 37 So, m∠P is 37 x 89 R 54 Q

Example 4 The Alabama state flag is shown. What is the missing angle measure in the triangle? x + 110 + 35 = 180 x + 145 = 180 -145 -145 x = 35 This missing measure is 35.

Scale Drawings Lesson 7-4

Use a Scale Drawing of a Scale Model Scale drawings and scale models are used to represent objects that are too large or too small to be drawn or build at actual size. The scale gives the ratio that compares the measurement of the drawing or model to the measurements of the real objects. The measurement of a drawing or model are proportional to the measurements on the actual object.

Example 1 What is the actual distance between Hagerstown and Annaplolis? Step 1: When we measure with a ruler, the distance is about 4 centimeters.

Example 1: Step 2: Write and solve a proportion using the scale. The distance between the cities is about 96 miles.

The length of the cell phone on the advertisement is 20 inches long. Example 2 A graphic artist is creating an advertisement for this cell phone. If she uses a scale of 5 inches = 1 inch, what is the length of the cell phone on the advertisement? Write a proportion using the scale. 5  4 = 1  a 20 = a The length of the cell phone on the advertisement is 20 inches long.

Example 3 A scale written as a ratio without units in simplest form is called a scale factor. Find the scale factor of a model sailboat if the scale is 1 inch = 6 feet. 1 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ 6 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑡 = 1 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ 72 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ = 1 72 The scale factor is 1 72 .

Draw Three-Dimensional Figures Lesson 7-5

Real-World Link In art class, Rasheed studied buildings known for their unusual architecture. He studied the Flatiron Building shown. Three-dimensional figures have length, width, and height. They can viewed from different perspectives, including the side view and top view.

Draw a Three-Dimensional Figures You can draw different views of three-dimensional figures. The most common views drawn are the top, side and front views. The top, side, and front views or a three-dimensional figures can be used to draw a corner view of the figure.

Example 1 Draw a top, a side, and front view of the figure. The top view is a triangle. The side and front view are rectangles.

Example 2 Draw a top, a side, and front view of the figure. The top view is a circle. The side and front view are triangles.

Cross Sections Lesson 7-6

Vocabulary Start-Up Label these figures as a prism or pyramid. A prism is a three-dimensional figure with at least two parallel, congruent faces called bases that are polygons. A pyramid is a three-dimensional figure with one base that is a polygon. It’s other faces are triangles. Label these figures as a prism or pyramid.

Identify Three-Dimensional Figure A plane is a flat surface that goes on forever in all directions. The figures shows rectangle ABCD. Line segments AB and DC are coplanar because they lie in the same plane. They are also parallel because they will never intersect, no matter how far they are extended. (Draw this!)

Identify Three-Dimensional Figure Just as two lines in a plane can intersect or be parallel, there are different ways that plans may be related in space.

Identify Three-Dimensional Figure Intersecting planes can form three-dimensional figures. A polyhedron is a three-dimensional figure with flat surfaces that are polygons. Prisms and pyramids are both polyhedrons.

Identify Three-Dimensional Figure There are also solids that are not polyhedrons. A cylinder is a three-dimensional figures with two parallel congruent circular bases connected by a curved surface. A cone has one circular base connected by a curved side to a single point (vertex).

Example 1 Identify the figure. Name the bases, faces, edges, and vertices. The figure has two parallel congruent bases that are triangles, so this is a triangular prism.

Example 2 Identify the figure. Name the bases, faces, edges, and vertices. The figure has one base that is a pentagon, so it is a pentagonal pyramid.

Example 3 Identify the figure. Name the bases, faces, edges, and vertices. The figure has rectangular bases that are parallel and congruent, so it is a rectangular prism.
