THE ADJECTIVE: Overview Adjectives are used to modify a noun or pronoun. Adjectives tell us what kind, which one, how much, or how many. What kind?: Korean, busy, blonde Which one?: seventh, those, any How much/how many?: several, five-hundred A woman, kind and helpful, gave us directions. It is empty.
THE ADJECTIVE: Articles Articles are the most common adjectives. There are only three: a, an, & the. a & an are called indefinite articles because they refer to any member of a general group. the is called the definite article because it refers to a particular one.
Determining: Noun or Adj.? Many nouns are commonly used as adjectives. bean bean soup gold gold coin bicycle bicycle shop football football game Labor Day Labor Day weekend Super Bowl Super Bowl party White House White House lawn
ADJECTIVE or PRONOUN? Pronouns are only pronouns if they stand alone. If they modify a noun or pronoun, they are adjectives. This is mine. This drawing is mine. Some are more expensive than others. Some clothes are more expensive than other clothes.

Remember… Many words can be nouns or adjectives depending on usage. The helmet is made of steel. [noun] It is a steel helmet. [adjective] Many words can be pronouns or adjectives depending on usage. That is a surprise. [pronoun] That information comes as a surprise. [adjective]
ADJECTIVES I’m going to show you a painting. In your notes, write as many sentences with adjectives as you can. Be sure they are actually adjectives.
