Indigenous People of Australia Aborigines – Native people of Australia arrived from southeast Asia by boat about 50,000 years ago. One million Aborigines lived on the continent in tribal land Captain James Cook claimed Australia for Great Britain in 1770. Australia became Great Britain's new penal/prison colony in 1771. Aborigines forced onto reservations in small areas of the country

European colonization’s Impact on Indigenous population Between 1788 and 1900, the Aboriginal population of Australia was reduced by 90% Causes of the decline of the indigenous population Introduction to new diseases Loss of land Loss of people through fighting with European settlers

Indigenous Population Decrease The most immediate consequence of European settlement was the introduction of new diseases. Diseases like small pox and chicken pox were very infectious and spread very rapidly killing many Aboriginal people Another consequence of British colonization was the taking away of land and water sources By 1870, all fertile land in Australia was taken away from aboriginal people and given to white settlers 3. Aboriginal people had 2 choices: resist British colonization or get used to the newcomers. The resistance by aboriginal people led to massive killings and massacres

Impact of European Colonization on Australia Colonization also impacted Australian Culture English is the most common language of Australia The Aborigines have their own language but were forced to learn and speak English 2. Most Australians are Christians Christian=76.4% Non-Christian=11% Other religions=12.6%. European missionaries worked hard to convert Aboriginal people to Christianity
