Identify why the Puritan way of life ended.

Setting the Stage Objective King James granted a charter to the Virginia Company of London. (joint- stock company) Goals: Build a colony Make profits by using selling gold and resources Find trade route to Asia Discover fate of Roanoke’s lost colony Recruited colonists Desired riches/adventure

Historical Spotlight Eastward Hoe! Propaganda Made people believe gold, rubies, and diamonds were plentiful. Get rich quick John Smith found colonists focused on finding gold and nothing else.

Main ideas of “Jamestown is Settled” Who settled Jamestown? 144 left England– 39 died. How many made it to James town? How did the settlers decide where to live? Grassy meadows, strawberries, deer, beaver, game. Protected by land on 3 sides. Easy access for supplies, not so easy to be spotted by Spanish.

What troubles did the colonist face? Settlement built on a swamp Mosquitoes Contaminated water Do the math; How many of the original settlers died? Remember, some died on the way. How many originally left? Starvation Searched for gold; didn’t tend to the wheat Skilled laborers, (perfumers, goldsmiths, jewelers) didn’t know how to farm, hunt, or fish Troubles with Native Americans

Who were some of the Jamestown leaders? Captain John Smith Forced colonists to work planting crops and build Establish friendly relations with Natives Returned to London Lord De La Warr Ordered colonists to return to Jamestown Established Must farm or be imprisoned/killed rule John Rolfe Married Pocahontas the daughter of Powhatan Temporary peace

Why was tobacco a successful commodity? Walter Raleigh’s expedition brought it back to England John Rolfe produced a milder form of the West Indies tobacco People grew it everywhere including the streets.

The new colonists included… apprentices (100 boys and girls) Became skilled at a trade indentured servants Given 50 acres of land

What was significant about 1619? First Africans arrive Traded for food and supplies. Helped make Jamestown self-sufficient 90 women sent to Jamestown by the Virginia Company. Helped the moral and population Virginia Company allowed election of leaders 11 settlements x 2 men (aka burgesses) elected Modeled after the English Parliament

What was the effect of Jamestown’s success? Encouraged other settlers to come to North America.
