Conflict in Northern Ireland What caused “The Troubles”?

Division of Ireland 1921: Anglo-Irish Treaty divides Ireland, 26 counties become “Free State”, 6 counties remain in UK In N. Ireland pro-British Protestants support the partition while pro-Irish Catholics do not, Protestants control N. Ireland’s local govt Irish Catholics face discrimination, lack of jobs, little rights, housing and schools are segregated

1960s: Catholics begin a civil rights campaign Battle of the Bogside 1960s: Catholics begin a civil rights campaign Protestants begin having “Orange Order” parades in Catholic neighborhoods Catholics begin to clash with marchers, RUC (police) back up Protestant marchers, rioting ensues Discuss: What do you think started the violence?

Paisley states IRA must give up all weapons for power-sharing IRA disarms – Paisley still says NO British tell Paisley if he doesn’t share power with Sinn Fein, Britain & Ireland will share direct rule of the north – Paisley finally agrees 2007: home rule is established in Northern Ireland with Paisley sharing power with former IRA commander Martin McGuinness N. Ireland has been at peace ever since, today with demographics changes there has been talk of the North eventually unifying with Ireland NO! “Dr. NO” “Chuckle Brothers”
