Bedrooms BEGINNING ESL LESSON This free English as a Second Language PowerPoint can be shown on interactive whiteboards. It is designed for lower-level students. A nice project would be to have students draw the layout of their bedrooms. BEGINNING ESL LESSON

bed People sleep in beds. Beds are comfortable. Ask the class how many hours of sleep they need.

pillow Most people sleep with a pillow under their head. Pillows are soft. Survey the class to see who uses a pillow. Does anyone use two or more pillows?

blanket . Blankets keep us warm at night. Ask the married students if their spouses “hog the blanket” at night.

crib A crib is a special bed for a baby. Cribs have high sides so babies won’t fall out. Review crib safety tips for parents with young children.

dresser This dresser has six drawers. Fold your T-shirts, underwear, socks, and pajamas and put them in the dresser. Ask the class how many drawers they have in their dressers. What do they keep in the top drawer?

mirror The woman is putting on make-up. She is looking in a mirror. What else do people do while looking in a mirror? Example: put on a tie, put on make-up, etc.

nightstand A nightstand is next to the bed. A book and a lamp are on the nightstand. Ask a few students what they keep on their nightstands.

alarm clock This is an alarm clock. The time is ten fifty-four. Let the students know what time you wake-up at. Explain that most people wake up later on the weekend.

curtains Purple curtains are hanging over the bedroom window. The window is closed. Make a list of other types of wall coverings.

rug This is a small rug. It is four feet long and two and a half feet wide. 2 ½ feet 4 feet Explain the difference between a rug and carpet. Describe wall to wall carpeting.

nightgown The woman is wearing a pink nightgown and slippers. She is ready for bed. Point to the woman’s slippers and ask questions about them.

slippers These are pink slippers. Slippers protect our feet and keep them warm. Explain that slippers come in pairs: a right slipper and a left slipper.

bathrobe The man is wearing a bathrobe. We wear bathrobes over our pajamas. Ask the class what is tied around the man’s bathrobe.

closet Bedrooms have closets. We keep clothes, shoes, belts, ties, and purses in closets. Ask the students if their closets are neat or messy.

shoerack Some people have a shoerack. A shoerack holds shoes, sandals, and slippers.

light switch Light switches turn lights on and off. When the light switch is “up” the lights are on. Have students point to the light switches in your classroom. Teach the sentences: Turn the lights on. Turn the lights off.

electrical outlet Bedrooms have electrical outlets. We plug cords into electrical outlets. Show students how to hold a plug and how to safely plug in an electrical device and also how to unplug it.

parts of a bed This bed has a headboard, a footboard, a bed frame, a mattress, and a pillow. headboard pillow mattress Use the words larger and smaller to describe beds: king size, queen size, double, single, etc. bed frame footboard
