Essential Question What is a safe, secure environment for children?

Safety needs include two main parts: –Freedom from danger –Sense of security A place in which children are: – free from danger –feel confident in their daily routines –know what to expect is a safe, secure environment.

Childproofing the Home The best way to find the dangers a child might encounter is to explore the home at his or her level – by getting down on your hands and knees. “You may feel silly, but a few self-conscious minutes are better than years of regret.”

Childproofing the Home Pay attention to potential dangers between the floor and about 40 inches above –Check carpets for buried dangers: buttons, pins, or coins –Make sure to store household products above floor level –Don’t leave cords hanging over the edge of high places –Cover electrical outlets

Safety in the Kitchen Keep children in a secured chair or out of the kitchen while preparing meals NEVER leave young children unattended in the kitchen!

Safety in the Kitchen Hot foods and beverages, glassware, and knives should be kept away from the edges of counters and tables. This will help prevent children from pulling these items down on themselves.

Safety in the Kitchen Use back burners on range Turn pot handles toward the center of the range

Safety in the Bathroom Paint hot faucet with red nail polish to help children remember which is hot Unplug appliances when not in use Rubber-covered guard over the faucet and knobs Safety cover on door knob Install a toilet lid lock

2.02-Preventing Injuries at Home Safety around Heat Sources Keep guards around open heaters, radiators, and floor furnaces Teach children that the heat source is “hot”

Home Fires Keep matches, lighters, cigarettes, and candles out of reach Install smoke detectors in every bedroom and near kitchen Keep working fire extinguishers Plan escape routes and teach to all, even very young children

Bathing Children Safely Is it safe to leave a child alone in the bathtub? Also be sure to use nonslip mat in tub set water below 120 degrees Use only 2 to 3 in water

Preventing Falls How can a parent prevent falls in the home? Keep doors and windows locked Secure shelves and other items Supervise children

Making Cribs and Beds Safe How far apart do the slats need to be in a crib to keep a baby’s head from becoming stuck? No more than 2 3/8 inches apart Paint on crib should not include lead and be smooth and not flaking Mattress should fit crib and be firm, no gaps The latch to raise and lower sides should lock securely

To Avoid suffocation Making Cribs and Beds Safe Why should all stuffed animals and fluffy blankets, and pillows be removed from the crib when child is sleeping?

Keeping mealtimes safe Handle foods properly to prevent food poisoning Avoid foods that could get lodged into baby’s throat –Raw veggies –Hot dogs –Popcorn –Pretzels –Whole grapes –Candy, etc.

2.02-Preventing Injuries at Home Preventing poisoning Request child-resistant packaging when possible. But keep in mind that child-resistant does not mean childproof. These medicines still need to be locked out of reach. Lead poisoning (in paint of houses built before 1978)

Toy Safety This is a tube tester. What do you think it might be used for? (toilet paper roll) The U.S. Consumer product Safety Commission states that items that fit into the test tube are too small to be safe for children 3 years of age and younger. Make sure as a parent to buy only age appropriate toys!!!

Emergency Keep a first aid kit on hand and emergency numbers by every phone in the home. Include the national toll-free poison hotline: 1-800-222-1222.
