Mixed Environments for Review and Generation of Engineering Designs Virtual Experiences Research Group University of Florida Computer Information Science and Engineering Overview We explore using a Mixed Environment (ME) to rapidly incorporate real objects into virtual environments. Our aim is to allow engineering teams to effectively conduct hands-on assembly design verification. This task would be simulated at a high degree of fidelity, and would benefit from the natural interaction afforded by a ME with many specific real objects. From CAD Models of parts Using Mixed Environments Engineers can effectively verify engineering not yet manufactured, and designs, creating assembly documents for scanned real objects payloads such as NASA’s ARES Mars Airplane Pipeline To rapidly incorporate real objects into a Mixed Environment, an object is scanned from multiple angles with a laser scanner. The scans then pass through an aligning, merging, and hole filling module to become a complete model. Colored markers for tracking are then attached to the real object, and corresponding marker positions are defined on the model. Real Virtual Align, Merge & Hole fill Tracked colored markers correspond to positions on the virtual object Visualization As engineering evaluation is a team-based exercise, we provide multiple platforms for visualization to support team interaction.
