2 COMBINED EDUCATIONAL AND TELEPRESENCE INTERFACE FOR ASTEP USING EVENTSCOPE
Presented by Peter Coppin Remote Experience and Learning Lab STUDIO for Creative Inquiry/ Robotics Institute Carnegie Mellon University WHO

3 EventScope is a public interface for Earth and Planetary Exploration
WHAT IS EVENTSCOPE? EventScope is a public interface for Earth and Planetary Exploration

4 EDUCATIONAL PERSPECTIVE: WHAT DO WE MEAN BY PUBLIC PLANETARY EXPLORATION?
The ability for a novice to experience the surface of another planet as if they were there The ability for that user to understand what is going without significant background information …and later, to affect a mission and impact a device on or around another planet while the mission is in progress

5 WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR PUBLIC PLANETARY EXPLORATION?
USABLE, FUN and EDUCATIONAL WHAT

6 HOW : USABLE AND FUN : ISSUES [SHOW ARES V IN ES]
Time delay between Earth and Mars Many more people than robots and No public user can [currently] control a planetary robot

7 HOW IS EVENTSCOPE EDUCATIONAL?
Participants need “scaffolding” “Scaffolding” must fit existing classroom realities and adhere to state and national standards [show a-tool] HOW IS EVENTSCOPE EDUCATIONAL

8 SUMMARY: HOW OUR REMOTE EXPERIENCE PIPELINE WORKS

9 HOW WE DEVELOP EXPERINCES
A LEAD DESIGNER CREATES A “LOOK AND FEEL” PROTOTYPE OF VISUALS AND INTERACTIVITY AN EDUCATOR MAKES AN EDUCATION FRAMEWORK SOFTWARE & ROBOTICS TEAM MEMBER MAKES NEW TECHNOLOGY AS NECCESARY (2) INITIAL MEETING WITH ALL DISCIPLINES PRODUCE DESIGN BASED ON EXPERIMENTS BEGIN ITERATIVE DEVELOPMENT TEST ON STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS AND DEPLOY IN SCHOOLS (3) (4) BACKGROUND-THE REMOTE EXPERIENCE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS: These team members work together using the following process to make user friendly and educational remote experience lessons. TEAM BRAINSTORMING (A): The process begins with a brainstorming session containing representatives from each area (A). This is used to describe the education goals, interactivity goals and any changes that might be required in the software. PROTOTYPES (B): Following this, each team member creates a prototype (B). The Educator creates and education outline. This consists of goals, standards addressed, and content mapped onto real data. Simultaneously, the lead designer creates an interactive demo using real data that describes the kinds of potential interactive experiences. The Software/ robotics team members define new requirements for the software based on the needs of the educators and designer. REVIEW AND MERGE (C): Following this, the entire team reviews activities. The lead designer integrates more accurate content into their interactive scene or the educators adds content into interactive templates created by the designer (C). ITERATION (D): Process B and C often requires several iterations (D). This is especially true when a new interaction paradigm is required or new software enhancements are created. TESTING (E): Finally, the software is ready to test. This begins with an in house test where students work on a test bed in the EventScope lab while they are being video taped. This allows the development team to spot and document any usability problems. Testing either leads to more iterations or the lesson is deployed in schools. Once again, the performance is evaluated and iterated until a satisfactory quality level is achieved. (5) (1) (6) ITERATE AS NECCESSARY

17 TEACHING THE TEACHERS TO USE ASTEP REMOTE EXPERIENCES

18 WHAT AND HOW? STRATEGY: Teach the teachers to teach students through the use of ASTEP remote experiences Train them to use the Authoring Tool to adapt remote experiences to their specific needs Leverage ongoing efforts at EventScope [Authoring Tool, Exchange Portal Efforts, Other Teacher Training Efforts]

19 WHY THIS APROACH? Big bang for buck
By training teachers to join E/PO community, we will not need to finance full E/PO staff from ASTEP. Fortunately we can leverage related work for MER, our Earth Portal Project and our Authoring Tool
