Complex Fractions

OBJECTIVE Using what I know about unit rate and proportions, I will simplify Complex Fractions.

Let’s Review Unit Rate Define Unit Rate A rate that is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1. What do we do to find the unit rate? 1.) Organize our data into a table (if necessary). 2.) We set up our rate as a fractions (y/x). 3.) We divide the numerator and denominator by the denominator to make sure we get a 1 in our new denominator. 4.) We write our answer out in a complete sentence.

Unit Rate Review $300 for 6 hours 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 300 6 = 50 1 $50 per hour 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 300 6 = 50 1 $50 per hour Time (hours) Cost 6 300

Lets’ Review Proportions Here are samples from my Power Point that I have constantly running on my Smart Board during Open House. The slides can be used to make your own Power Point. The pictures had to be flattened due to copyright but you can simply edit the text boxes and your own information. The fonts may look different on your screen if they are not downloaded onto your computer. You can change the font to fit your needs. Oneof the fonts used in this product is from kevinandamanda.com. It is called Pea Katrina. It can be downloaded from their website for free if you want to use it. Lets’ Review Proportions Define Proportions An equation stating that two ratios are equal. How do we Solve Proportions 1.) Cross Multiply 2.) Divide

Complex Fraction A fraction whose numerator or denominator is a fraction and where the denominator can not equal zero. Example: 2 1 2 ----- 1 1 4

How to Solve Complex Fractions 1.) Organize the data into a table (if necessary) 2.) Set problem up as if you’re solving for the unit rate. 3.) Set problem up as if you’re dividing fractions. 4.) Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. 5.) Convert whole number to improper fractions. 6.) Cross Multiply (beginning with numerator on the left). 7.) Divide both the numerator and the denominator by the denominator. 8.) Give your answer in a complete sentence.

Let’s Try Some Simplify : 1.) 1 4 2 2.) 7 1 2 9

Let’s Try Some Imani is painting her house. She paints 34 𝟏 𝟐 square feet in 𝟑 𝟒 hour. At this rate, how many square feet can she paint each hour

Peer Teaching 1.) Stand Up. 2.) Find someone you would like to work with and sit together. 3.) Decide who will be Peer Teacher A and Peer Teacher B. 4.) Peer Teacher A, using the steps to solve Complex Fractions guide your partner through the process (partner is working the problem out) 5.) Switch roles with next problem.

Peer Teaching Practice 1.) 1 2 5 2.) 4 5 8 3.) 1 3 8 9 4.) 1 6 1 3 8

Peer Teaching Practice 5.) Madison wants to make cookies for her little sister’s birthday party. She is cutting a roll of cookie dough into pieces that are 𝟏 𝟐 inch thick. If the roll is 13 inches long, how many cookies can she make?
