Correct answer: 7/8 Correct answer: Suzi by 1/10 of a day

2 DURING: MULTIPLYING & DIVIDING FRACTIONS
Learning Target: I can… Deepen my conceptual understanding of division and multiplication with fractions. Use real-life problem-solving situations to surface the meaning of division and multiplication of fractions.

3 Key Points Multiplying Dividing Multiplying fractions is easier than adding or subtraction because you don’t need to find common denominators. YAY!!! Just multiply straight across. Multiply numerators together. Then, multiply denominators together **CHANGE A MIXED NUMBER INTO AN IMPROPER FRACTION **SIMPLIFY YOU ANSWER

4 “I DO” Multiplying Fractions
4/15 6/40 = 3/20 352/27 = 13 1/27

5 “WE DO” Multiplying Fractions
A carpenter is fixing a house. He needs to cut some beams. He will be sawing off 2/3 of a six and a half foot beam. How much will he be sawing off? Answer: He will saw off 4 1/3 feet of the beam.

6 “YOU DO” Multiplying Fractions
You are driving along and see that your tank is only 3/8 full. The tank holds 14 gallons of gas. Your car goes 22 1/2 miles for every gallon of gas. How far can you drive before you run out of gas? How much gas do you have? 3/8 * 14 = ? Take the number of gallons and multiply it by 22 1/2 to get your answer.

7 “I DO” Dividing Fractions
