5 PILLARS OF ISLAM SALAH ZAKAH SAWM HAJJ SHAHADAH

The Five Pillars of Islam Shahadah The First pillar Purpose of lesson What is significance of the first pillar of Islam as an expression of belief, practice and identity?

What is the first pillar? Shahadah “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad, is the (final) Messenger of Allah.” Shi’a add these words into their declaration (Ali is the friend of Allah and the successor of Prophet Muhammad) This is the central and the only ‘non-action’ pillar. Iman (faith) provides the central pillar-strength that sustains the whole structure. A man (person) joins the fold of Islam by honestly believing in and professing faith in the unity of God and the Prophet-hood of Muhammad.’ (Khurshid Ahmed) Declaration is essential to convert in Islam, one has to take a bath before this. Why?

Think Pair Share What does it mean to Muslims? ‘There is no god but Allah’ It reminds that even Muhammad can never be regarded on a par with God. The words are repeated many times as daily prayer rituals, and five times a day in Adhan (call for prayer). Muslim fathers whisper the words into the ears of their new-born child. In Surah 1 The Qur'an says, "You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help." Similarly, the Qur'an also states, "Worship Allah and join no partner with Him." [S4:36] Surah 112: The most summarizing expression of Tawhid

Think Pair Share What do Muslims mean by this declaration? ‘Muhammad, is the (final) Messenger of Allah’. "He who obeys the messengers obeys Allah." [S4:80] "And for every people there is (sent) a guide." [S13:7] Prophet Muhammad, is the last Prophet. No prophet shall come after him. “Every prophet before me was sent for his own people but I am sent for all mankind.” (Hadith)

Quiz Define Shahadah. Why it is the central pillar of Islam? What does Ibadah-worship mean in Islam? What is the purpose of Islamic rituals? What does the first part of Shahadah signify? Why is the 2nd part of Shahadah as significant as the first one? How Shahadah is different or similar from Christian belief in trinity? On what occasions Muslims repeat the words of Shahadah and why? Why it is recommended for a new convert to take a shower (Ghusl) after declaring the Shahadah?
