If you have a smartphone please download these free apps: 7th Grade 2017-2018 Mr. Lewis “Those who cannot not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” George Santayana Website: https://southpointe.wvusd.k12.ca.us email: rlewis@wvusd.k12.ca.us Phone: 595- 8171 ext. 57158 SUGGESTED MATERIALS We will use this textbook as our main resource. We have a class set, so leave your textbook at your house unless otherwise notified. Students will study Medieval History from about 500 to 1500 AD/CE. They will discover the places where civilizations developed, how geography influenced cultures, and how these cultures have helped shape the world today. Major emphasis will be given to Mesoamerica, South America, China, Japan, West Africa, Arabia, and Europe. I feel especially privileged and excited to teach 7th Grade Social Studies to your child! Say good bye to messy papers. Students are recommended to use two, two pocket, three prong folders to organize their work. The teacher reserves the right to deal with specific late work and make-up work issues on a case by case basis. The general rules that will apply are as follows: If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to retrieve work you missed. Classwork can be found in the Absent pouch in class. You can download any notes you missed and access homework on-line. You have 3 days to make up the work or else it will be considered late. Late assignments will be deducted 50%. Late work will be accepted until the end of each semester. Students may write in pencil or blue or black ink only. We will also utilize red pens for editing and highlighters for annotating. We will watch historically based videos & clips to help bring topics to life. Most of the videos are made by respected broadcasting networks, such as the History Channel and are designed for educational purposes. Some of the videos may contain re-enactments of wars or war like images. If you don’t not feel comfortable having your child view these types of images please let me know. All students will need to access the internet at home or on campus frequently. A charged smartphone is also suggested to bring to class, but not required. Parents and students are encouraged to email me (email above) regarding any questions throughout the year. I will update my teacher webpage and homework page on the South Pointe Middle School website daily. Here students can find homework assignments and most class materials. If you have a smartphone please download these free apps: Participation Respect everyone Prepare yourself Be helpful and positive No phones without approval Make smart choices Projects 5 % 15 % 50 % Classwork/Homework As the year progresses there will be more apps suggested to assist student learning. 30 % Tests/Quizzes
