1815 Before news of peace treaty ending War of 1812 reaches America, Jackson defeats British at Battle of New Orleans

1814 During the War of 1812, the British attack Washington D.C. and burn government buildings, including the White House.

1807 Congress forbids all foreign trade. American smuggles illegally import and export goods anyway

1813 American ships under Oliver Hazard Perry defeat British fleet on Lake Erie and force British to retreat into Canada.

1803 The United States purchases the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million.

1805 Zebulon Pike leads an expedition west across Louisiana Territory to Rocky Mountains and eventually into Spanish New Mexico.

1812 After war breaks out between the United States and Britain, USS Constitution defeats British warship in major sea battle.
