California Intermountain Region The Great Basin California Intermountain Region

South Way of Life In the Southern part of the Great Basin the Native American tribes would farm. The area was not very fertile so instead of making baskets, the people would make pots out of clay.

North Way of Life In the Northern part of the Great Basin the Native American tribes made a great discovery of tar. The tar was used for canoes in order to close where the pieces of wood met.

Center Way of Life In the Center part of the Great Basin the Native American tribes farmed because they had such fertile land. They would use trees and wood in order to make their teepee like homes. The inside posts where made from bark of trees.

Buildings In the center area of the tribal environment, there would be a round building where meetings would be held for the tribe. Women would use acorns and antlers to carve things into the wood.

A Child’s Life The children of the Great Basin region lived like many of our children do today. They would play games like soccer, football, and lacrosse.

Food This area was rich with animals. The Great Basin people would hunt deer using their meat for food and their antlers for tools. They would also use the canoes to hunt salmon. The acorns were ground up into dust in order to make bread.
