The West These groups of Native Americans lived in lands from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast. Formed large trade networks which allowed them to get goods from far away.

The Northwest Coast This region stretched along the Pacific Ocean. It includes Washington, Oregon and British Columbia in Canada. The Haida group lived in this area. They hunted, fished, and gathered nuts and plants. The rivers and coastal waters were an important resource. Salmon was a main food source for this group. Whales gave them food and oil for burning.

The Northwest Coast This group lived in lodges. They built boats called dugouts to hunt whales, travel, and trade. Made up a new language for trading.

Arctic The Arctic area is near the North Pole. The Aleut lived along the coast. These groups hunted animals such as foxes, seals, and whales. The seals were used for their meat and skin. The skin was used to make clothes and tents. Whale oil was burned to light and heat homes. Animal bones were used to make tools

The Sub-Arctic The Cree people hunted and gathered plants to meet their needs. They used trees for wood. The wood was used to make bows and arrows to hunt animals.
