六四 June 4th Incident

六四 What is called “The Tiananmen Square Event” is called “六四” in 中文. (The Chinese “天安门事件” refers to the event happened in 1976.) It is hard to find the truth of 六四; My personal impression: It started when Hu Yaobang, a beloved former president died and thousands of college students in Beijing decided to mourn him and ask for democracy from the Communism Party. They organized protests which developed to hunger strikes and more people joined. Zhao Ziyang, the president at that time showed sympathy to protesters and he had to resign shortly after that. The situation kept deteriorating and the conflicts between protesters and the government increases that deaths and injuries started to appear. On TV we saw protesters burn things and kill soldiers. Deng Xiaoping, the real governor, finally repressed the protest. The Communism Party said that these students were used by anti-China organizations and the nature of the protest had changed so the government had to protect its people; while western media called it the Tiananmen Massacre.
