St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School Primary transition Attainment and Curriculum presentation

Presentation Part 1 – Attainment and use of Insight Part 2 – Draft Curriculum structure and course choice sheets

Insight definitions: Insight: is a professional tool which helps secondary schools and local authorities identify areas of success and where improvements can be made in terms of S4-6 attainment. Virtual Comparator: For each school leaver, ten matching school leavers are randomly selected based on gender, additional support needs, stage of leaving school (S4, S5 or S6) and the social context in which they live (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation). Tariff score: Subject courses and individual units are awarded tariff points. The number of tariff points awarded depends on: the SCQF level of the course or unit; whether the full course has been undertaken and assessed; and the grade achieved for the course. The average complimentary tariff point is a measure which helps compare pupils in different schools who undertake differing numbers of qualifications in S4-S6 due to the school curriculum model.  The complementary tariff measure provides additional reassurance for schools and parents that the attainment data presented provides a meaningful basis for reflection and self-evaluation.

2016-17 Improving Attainment for S4 pupils (all candidates)

Improving Attainment for S5 pupils (all candidates)

Improving Attainment for S6 pupils (all candidates)

Percentage of S4 pupils attaining Literacy (SCQF levels 4 & 5)

Percentage of S4 pupils attaining Numeracy (SCQF levels 4 & 5)

The rationale & aims of St Thomas of Aquin’s Curriculum The aim of the curriculum is to help prepare all pupils to take their place in a modern society and economy through experiencing a challenging yet engaging curriculum. The curriculum at St Thomas’ is coherent, relevant, and inclusive, which allows a pupil to progress from S1 through to their specific leaving year experiencing high quality learning and teaching and will lead to a positive destination. The school is committed to closing the attainment gap through a curriculum which enables pupils to progress through and achieve CfE levels and National Qualifications when they are ready to do so.

The rationale & aims of St Thomas of Aquin’s Curriculum Pupils will be guided by an Integrated Support Team supported by Skills Development Scotland through a planned curriculum model which has a distinct Broad General Education (S1-S3) and Senior Phase (S4-6). Pupils will move from experiencing 19 subjects in S1 and S2, to 14 subjects in S3, to sitting 7 National Qualifications in S4 and 5 National Qualifications in S5. In S6 there is a range of flexible pathways to support the individual needs of pupils to ensure the best positive and sustainable destination from St Thomas’.

The Broad General Education (S1-S3) In S1-S3 pupils will experience a broad range of subjects (19) in S1 and S2. Courses & programmes will generally follow Level 3 and Level 4 experiences and outcomes and, where appropriate, National 5 outcomes. Personalisation and choice in the Broad General Education will impact at the beginning of S3 and a system of 2 choices within the identified column structures – see S3 Curriculum.
