Happening This Week… Grammar Math Students will continue working on our multiplication unit. The test is this week. We will begin division in 1 week. Pathway 1: Solving multiplication using pictures, repeated addition, skip counting, and arrays Pathway 2: Multiplying a 1 digit number by a multiple of 10, Identifying patterns in the multiplication table, identifying unknown multiplication equations Pathway 3: Multiplication Properties (commutative, associative, distributive) Pathway 4: 1 and 2 step “x” word problems *Students who finish all pathways will be working on a PBL** Reading This week we will begin our series unit. Students will choose a series to read and be a part of a book club. Students will meet with their book club weekly and will also respond to discussion questions through blogging. Students will be bringing these books home each night as part of their reading homework. Students will be assigned a certain number of pages to read each day in class and they will read whatever they don’t finish in class as their reading homework. Students will learn this week about character traits, motivations, and feelings and how they contribute to the events in a story. Writing Students will finish up their research for their nonfiction newspaper articles. They will learn this week how to write good paragraphs. This means they begin with a main idea sentence and it is followed by several detail sentences. They will also learn how to write subheadings for their paragraphs and a good title. Grammar This week the students will learn about common nouns vs. proper nouns. They will learn that proper nouns name a specific person, place, or thing, and need to be capitalized. Science- This week we will begin a new unit. We will begin our unit on the Earth and the Universe. Students will learn about the sun and stars, planets, and other things in the solar system.
