Ms. Deming’s Weekly Newsletter March 8, 2016 Read Across American Week Book Character Day Hat Day Dress like what you want to be when you grow up… Mix & Match Day Our Black History Month plays acted out!

2 Happening This Week… Grammar
Math This week we will finish with our math unit. On Monday the students will learn how to compare fractions. They will learn using the following methods: draw a picture, compare to a benchmark fraction, butterfly method, and finding the least common multiple. Tuesday the students will play a comparing fractions game. Wednesday we will go over the study guide that is due and we will play a review jeopardy in class. The test has been moved from Wednesday to Thursday to allow for a day in class to review. Friday the students will take a pretest for the new unit. Reading This week the students will continue with our Green Book unit from William and Mary. Students will be responsible for reading chapter 5 from the book and answering their comprehension questions in their journal. In class students will discuss their reading in book clubs, create questions for our next paideia seminar on Monday, complete a literature web on chapter 5, and write a persuasive paragraph using the hamburger model graphic organizer. Students will have a quiz on Chapter 5 on Monday, March 14. They will get to use their journal and book. Writing Students are working on nonfiction writing and also persuasive writing. In class we will discuss what it means to take something for granted. In The Green Book and our real aloud book Out of My Mind both characters take things for granted. Students will write a persuasive paragraph about which 2 everyday abilities would be more important to have: seeing, talking, walking. Grammar There will be no grammar this week as we are trying to finish up with our nonfiction writing articles. Upcoming Test & Quiz Dates: -Fractions Unit Test Thursday 3/10/16 (date changed from Wednesday 3/9/16) due to me bring out Monday. -Monday, March 14 – Reading Comprehension quiz on Ch. 5 of The Green Book Science- This week the students will learn about landforms and how they are created. This unit ties in very well with the social studies geography unit we are currently working on. Social Studies- This week the students will explore and study different landforms in North Carolina. Students will create a NC Landforms Flipbook where they include information about each region in North Carolina. Notes from Ms. Deming  END OF YEAR YEARBOOKS **To order a yearbook go to and enter yearbook ID code Enter your child’s name during the order process. Deadline is April 3, To submit a HOOT in the yearbook for your child complete the online form at These are free! Deadline is Friday, March 25. To submit photos to the yearbook submit to IAC by March 18, Questions about yearbooks contact Spring Enrichment Clusters **Friday, March 11, 2016 the signup link for Spring Enrichment cluster will go live. You will get the form with the link in this week’s Thursday folders. Remember, this is first come first serve.** Student Council End of the Year Fundraiser On behalf of the student council, the entire school will be doing a school fundraiser and “Give Back” project. They will be buying new PE equipment and also possible providing each class with a recess bag. 3/11/16 – Bring in $2 and bring your technology device to lunch 3/14/16 – Bring in $2 and sit next to any friend in the lunchroom 3/15/16 – Loose Change Day: See if you can collect any loose change from around the house or your parents’ car. Bring it in on this day! 3/16/16 – Bring in $1 and wear your favorite hat to school 3/17/16 – Bring in $1 and wear your silliest tie or bowtie 3/18/16 – Bring in $1 and wear your favorite pajamas to school 3/21/16 – Bring in $2 and bring your technology to lunch 3/22/16 – Bring in $1 and wear your hair as funky as you would like 3/23/16 – Bring in $1 and come to school wearing everything mismatch. 3/24/16 – Pay $10 to be able to throw a pie in Mr. Fridie’s face.
