1 Last Week’s Happenings…
Ms. Deming’s Weekly Newsletter November 10, 2015 Last Week’s Happenings… Class Store It was that time again for our class store. Students went shopping with the money that they have earned on their credit and debit sheets. Wonder Projects Students turned in their Wonder projects on Friday. Many students chose to do a play based on the book. All groups presented their plays and did a great job! Below is Mahip acting as the main character Auggie in the book. To the left is Asha teaching the class a lesson on bullying and above her is Kalea with her precept. Nonfiction Text Features Scavenger Hunt Last week the students were given Scholastic magazine and did a text feature scavenger hunt. They had to look for and cut out as many text features as they could find, cut them out, and glue them on poster board and label them.

2 Last Week’s Happenings…
Ms. Deming’s Weekly Newsletter November 10, 2015 Last Week’s Happenings… Nonfiction Reading Unit Launch To launch the start of our nonfiction reading unit, Gwen Brooks from Discovery Place came in with a rat and talked about nonfiction. She even let the students pet it! Science Experiments Students participated in two science experiments last week. They participated in one to explore conduction of heat. We placed chocolate chips on different materials and added heat. Students were able to see conduction and also determine which materials were good conductors of heat and which were insulators. The second one was on convection. Students used hot and cold water to see how convection worked with water currents.

3 Happening This Week… Grammar
Math This week the students will continue with our multiplication unit. There is also a group of students who are finishing up with the addition/subtraction unit. Please encourage your child to continue to practice their math facts 1-12 at home. They are taking timed tests when they are ready to take them in class. They get 2 minutes to complete 30 problems. Your child should be practicing whichever fact they are currently on. If they have already mastered their 1-12 facts, they will be working on multiple digit multiplication such as 2 by 1, 2 by 2, and 3 by 2 digit multiplication. Reading This week we will continue with our nonfiction reading unit. During reading workshop students must be reading a nonfiction text. On Monday of this week the students took their informal assessment from last week’s skills: text features and looking at photographs and maps to get a deeper understanding of the text. On Tuesday students will learn how to stop and jot with nonfiction text. They will also learn how to ask and answer who, what, when, where, and why questions about a nonfiction text by referring back to the text for the answers. Writing We will continue with our Upping the Quality of Our Narrative unit. This week students will learn how to add details to their story by stretching out what happened and learn how to improve their stories by using better vocabulary. Next students will learn how to add dialogue into their stories and when to begin new paragraphs. Grammar This week the students will learn about run-on sentences. They will learn what a complete sentence is and what a run-on sentence looks like. They will need to break run-on sentences into two separate sentences.
