For, said he, who serves his fellows is, of all his fellows, greatest For, said he, who serves his fellows is, of all his fellows, greatest. – Meteu THEPOWEROFONE 2009NOACTRAINING

Robert Greenleaf on Servant Leadership The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature. THEPOWEROFONE 2009NOACTRAINING

Robert Greenleaf on Servant Leadership The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived? THEPOWEROFONE 2009NOACTRAINING

The Power of One ‘HastoWorkinHarmony’ You talk about the Power of One, and I’ll equate it to the military in that respect. A proper company would have about 40 people. You’d have generally a lieutenant maybe a captain, you’d have a senior NCO, and then you’d have your squad leader and your assistant squad leader… it sounds just like Boy Scouts doesn’t it? And in that squad, everyone would have their own responsibilities. You would have a radio operator, which is what I did, I carried a radio, but I also carried a rifle. You would have a grenadier, and you would have a machine gunner who would have a two man crew with him, and then you would have three or four riflemen. So you are, yes, you’re just one, but you are a part of something bigger. And in a war if you’re going out and you’re fighting, you don’t want to go out on the field by yourself. You want this power, this group, this support that’s going to elevate you to the next level of being able to do your job. If we don’t have riflemen up there protecting the mortar pit, the mortar pit’s going to get overrun, and we lose fire superiority. If the radio man doesn’t get protected, and he gets taken out, you lose communication with the outside world, and you’re really in a lot of trouble then. Everything ties together. It has to work in harmony. THEPOWEROFONE 2009NOACTRAINING

The Power of One ‘MakesYouWhole’ You really saw it in the military when you’re in a firefight. If somebody got hit, you could really tell who got hit just based on what was happening. If the machine gunner got hit and he went down, you lost a lot of fire superiority. The radio operator goes down and there’s no communication, I can’t talk to the other three squads that are out there. I don’t know what they’re doing, and all of a sudden I can’t call in artillery, I can’t call in a medivac helicopter, and I can’t call in anything to get us out of there. So when someone got hit, you could really tell the ripple effect of how it acted, the power of one is gone because you’ve lost one, and that one makes you whole. But in the military you can lose one and still survive, you can lose two and still survive, because it’s a team. Scouting’s the same way, if you’re rock climbing, the guy down there belaying the rope better be down there belaying the rope. If he lets go, it doesn’t work unless you’ve got really good fingers and really good shoes and can hold onto the side of that rock face. So it takes it all to make it work, but yet it all can work independently, “The Power of One.” THEPOWEROFONE 2009NOACTRAINING

For me, feeling a part of the cause that I work for, and specifically forming relationships with each and every one of the young girls in our program, gives me the feeling of being a part of something larger. I am fighting for a larger cause, to end violence and discrimination towards women in Sri Lanka, and through that the world. When I put things in that perspective, all of the stuff that I go through daily doesn't bother me, because I know they'll pay off in the long run. And because I feel so close to these girls, because we are essentially on the same team, when one of us succeeds, we all succeed. Giving a part of yourself up for others in this way is a truly amazing feeling. – Ellen Sojka THEPOWEROFONE 2009NOACTRAINING
