TU Delft Contributing to radical new scientific insights & technological breakthroughs in the field of: Energy Water Materials Transport Building Industrial Production Industrial Design Mission: Interdisciplinary focus & Solution oriented driven by Sustainability & Safety

Research and Education of Flood Defence Engineers at TU Delft MSc specialisation in Hydraulic Engineering; This focus area concentrates on the design and construction of dikes, dams, locks, weirs, storm-surge barriers and quays. Main approach: to study natural hazards from a Risk Management point of view Risk management of natural hazards needs to include the steps of hazard identification, risk analysis (probability of occurrence- and consequence analysis), risk assessment and risk mitigation (including CBA’s of mitigation strategies)

Research in Flood Defence The research centre "Water: Environment, Cycles, Infrastructure and Management" is one of the twelve research centres that Delft University of Technology has selected to represent outstanding research of Delft University of Technology. In the Water Research Centre Delft five different faculties are brought together, covering a broad variety of topics such as spatial planning and infrastructure in deltas, environmental issues, protection against flooding and draughts, clean and affordable drinking water and integrated water management.

Review of existing university networks and consortia in the field of flood risks at TU Delft International networks and contacts; a selection Asia: Vietnam, Bangladesh, China, Philippines Upgrading Training Capacity in River- and Coastal Engineering Water Resources Engineering Central America: Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua Disaster Reduction through Sustainable Development Africa: South Africa Coastal Engineering

EU projects FLOODSITE SAFERELNET PROVERBS ESRA FLOODSITE covers the physical, environmental, ecological and socio- economic aspects of floods from rivers, estuaries and the sea. The SAFERELNET Thematic Network is concerned with providing safe and cost effective solutions to industrial products, systems, facilities and structures. The results of PROVERBS represent the pinnacle of research achievements in Europe and are aimed at owners, designers and constructors of caisson breakwaters. ESRA is a non-profit international association for the advance and application of safety and reliability technology in all areas of human endeavour.; an "umbrella" organisation with members among national professional societies, industrial organisations and higher education institutions; common interest is safety and reliability. FLOODSITE SAFERELNET PROVERBS ESRA

Participation in and contribution to GFDRR/ISDR Track 1 To enhance global and regional advocacy, partnerships and knowledge management for mainstreaming hazard risk management in low and middle-income countries at risk; To promote the standardization and harmonization of hazard risk management tools, methodologies and practices. Track 2 Mainstreaming disaster reduction in development processes to ensure preparedness becomes routinely mainstreamed into dimensions of responsible public management in all planning processes.
