LAB SAFETY RULES

LAB PREPARATION READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS GIVEN TO YOU BY THE INSTRUCTOR REVIEW ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS NEEDED FOR THE LAB DO NOT PERFORM EXPERIMENTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN AUTHORIZED BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR

ALWAYS……… USE THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT PROVIDED FOR YOU IMMEDIATELY REPORT ANY ACCIDENT, INJURY, OR INCORRECT PROCEDURE TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR AT ONCE!

LAB RULES FOOD OR DRINK ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE LAB NEVER USE LAB GLASSWARE AS A CUP NEVER TASTE ANY CHEMICAL SUBSTANCE, OR TRANSFER POISONOUS MATERIAL INTO A GLASS WITH YOUR MOUTH NEVER RUN, PUSH, OR ENGAGE IN HORSEPLAY OR PRACTICAL JOKES!

ONLY LAB MANUALS, AND LAB NOTEBOOKS ARE PERMITTED IN THE WORKING AREAS LONG HANGING NECKLACES, BULKY JEWELRY OR CLOTHING SHOULD NOT BE WORN IN THE LAB YOUR ATTIRE SHOULD NOT PRESENT A DANGER TO YOUR SAFETY OR A HAZARD TO YOUR EXPERIMENT

SAFETY EYEWARE IS NECESSARY WHEN USING DANGEROUS CHEMICALS, HOT LIQUIDS, OR ANY HEAT SOURCE IF ANY EYE PROBLEM OCCURS, USE THE EYEWASH IMMEDIATELY AND REPORT TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR FOR FURTHER ACTION

BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN DEALING WITH HEAT OR FIRE NEVER LEAVE A LIT BUNSEN BURNER OR ANY HOT OBJECT UNATTENDED NEVER REACH OVER AN EXPOSED FLAME. ALWAYS USE TONGS OR POTHOLDERS TO HANDLE HOT LAB EQUIPMENT NEVER ALLOW FLAMMABLE MATERIALS SUCH AS ALCOHOL NEAR AN OPEN FLAME NEVER POINT THE MOUTH OF A TEST TUBE TOWARDS ANYBODY WHILE IT IS HEATING

NEVER USE ELECTRICAL OUTLETS UNLESS SPECIFIED BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR SMOTHER FIRES WITH A TOWEL OR FIRE BLANKET IF YOUR CLOTHING SHOULD CATCH FIRE, SMOTHER IT WITH A FIRE BLANKET OR SOAK IT UNDER THE SAFETY SHOWER NEVER RUN! IF NECESSARY, FOLLOW PROPER FIRE DRILL PROCEDURES

HANDLE CHEMICAL MATERIALS ONLY UNDER THE DIRECTION OF YOUR INSTRUCTOR NEVER TASTE OR TOUCH SUBSTANCES WITHOUT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS USE CONTAINERS THAT ARE PROPERLY LABELED NEVER SMELL FUMES WITHOUT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

IF YOU SPILL ACIDS OR OTHER CORROSIVE SUBSTANCES, WASH IT OFF IMMEDIATELY WITH WATER NOTIFY YOUR TEACHER IMMEDIATELY OF ALL SPILLS WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER USING CHEMICALS OR WORKING WITH PRESERVED ORGANISMS

PLACE BROKEN GLASS AND SOLID SUBSTANCES IN DESIGNED CONTAINERS KEEP WASTE MATERIALS OUT OF THE LAB SINK HANDLE LAB EQUIPMENT PROPERLY ASK FOR HELP IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE ANY LABORATORY EQUIPMENT

DO NOT USE CHIPPED, CRACKED OR DIRTY GLASSWARE DO NOT FORCE GLASS TUBING OR THERMOMETERS INTO STOPPERS USE CARE IN HANDLING ALL SHARP EQUIPMENT, SUCH AS SCAPELS AND DISSECTING NEEDLES

WHEN YOUR LABORATORY INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE, TURN OFF WATER AND GAS AND DISCONNECT ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS CLEAN ALL EQUIPMENT AND RETURN ALL MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES TO THEIR PROPER PLACES CLEAN YOUR LAB AREA WITH WATER AND DRY WITH A TOWEL ALL LAB SURFACES AND SINKS SHOULD BE CLEAN AND DRY
