Learning How to Control Anger is Very Important Anger is one of the earliest words that children learn and understand Babies get angry and cry when they are not picked up Preschoolers have temper tantrums Elementary school children show anger by using angry words and actions Teenagers become defiant

Anger is a Major Problem in Our Society In the news On the radio On TV Video games Movies Music

Children Can Learn a New Way to Handle Anger Be a role model for your child Children may copy your behaviors Children must learn a that being angry is OK, but hurting themselves or others is NOT

Anger and the Body Muscles tighten in the face, stomach, legs, arms or hands Face becomes hot Fists or jaw clench Brain cannot think properly When you notice these sensations….. Calm Down!

Adults Can Teach Children What to Do When They are Angry Stop Calm down Think Choose the best solution Let angry feelings go You can only control yourself Things dont always have to work out the way you want them to work out

Teach Anger Control When Children are Not Angry Practice calming techniques such as…. Deep breathing Visualization (special quiet place) Choose alternate reactions such as….. Choose to leave the situation Ignore the situation Focus on someone or something else Give encouragement or praise

When Children Become Angry with You They may refuse to talk They may shrug their shoulders They may repeat I dont know DONT MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE.. STAY CALM Help the child calm down Give choices You are in charge

Remember Set limits in a calm manner and dont give in Stay in control of your own emotions Solve problems peacefully Help prevent angry situations from becoming uncontrollable
